Stryker60416 lovers: need an OCTAGON barrel?
I apologize if this is not the proper forum, but I wanted you guys to know that there is a honkin' deal on an OCTAGON 416 Lilja barrel on ebay. The seller is Speedy Gonzalez, so I would think you could trust the description. The acution ends tomorrow and the bidding as I type this is $159..

GeorgeSI spoke with Speedy about this barrel, and the dimension across the flats at the muzzle (assuming it was threaded for a Model 70 and finished at 24") was .665".
Considering a .416" bore, that doesn't leave much metal in the barrel walls (.1195" wall thickness).

FjoldI calculated that cutting the 28" blank back to 25 inches the barrel would be .689 across the flats at the muzzle. (Assuming a straight taper after the 3" chamber area) This would would give you .1365" wall thickness at the muzzle which I felt comfortable with.
At a 24" finished length the barrel at the muzzle would be .697" which would leave a .1405" wall thickness.
I didn't buy it but I wanted too.

GeorgeSFjold,
The .665" was the measurement Speedy himself took on the barrel. If I wanted a whippy barrel, I'd buy an A-Bolt.

Yep, Speedy took that measurement at the end of the 28" blank.
Because he said that the barrel was .865" across the flats at the breech end and .665" at the muzzle, I assumed that it had a taper from breech to crown of .200" starting after the 3" chamber section until he reached 28" (.200" for 25 inches)
This meant that the barrel tapered .008" for every inch of it's length so that if you cut the barrel back to 25" it would add .024" to the barrel crown diameter.

GeorgeSOh, brother! I was very specific when I asked him that question.
You wouldn't think it would take much thinking to take a measurement 4" back from the muzzle.

AtkinsonMy 10.75x68 is .665 at the muzzle and its not whippy at all, gives me roughly .130 wall thickness of barrel at the muzzle and thats plenty...My 404 is .700 and I can't tell any difference...I do like lighter rifles however, as long as they shoot...
That contour will normally give you a 9 to 9.5 pound rifle depending on barrel length. A tad light for some, but it sure comes in handy on a long hot trek...
You can always thicken it up if you must by chopping off a few inches...
