JJ_MillerLets Put This Issue To Bed...............
We have beat the 375R issue enough. We all know where everyone else stands.
Since it will be at least '08 or maybe '09 before I can comment on how the 375R works on elephant, buff and lion I am going to let it rest until then.
My son and I will be taking our two rifles to SA in June for 14 days. Not a real test but it will get the rifles feet wet.
So lets move on to another big bore...........JJ

Isn't this forum the only place where .375 anything is considered "big bore?"

No one ever said that the 375 Ruger would not do a fine job in the field. In fact, I think you read numerous posts pointing out that game would never know the difference (if any) between 375 H&H and 375 Ruger.
But if you go into a sporting goods store in RSA looking for ammo because the airline lost your suitcase,....

At least we can have some spirited discussion here about the 375R.

I have a serious question, and no confrontation is intended. I have been to RSA plenty, but I have never been in a gun shop there. How many of what we here in the US feel are more obscure British big bore rounds are commonly found off the shelf in RSA of Zim? This question should also include many of the European metrics.
I can well imagine that they are somewhat common in Australia. I know I won't find them at Sportsman's Warehouse, but some may be stocked at a Cabela's.
Dan, have you had occasion to visit gun shops in RSA? What do they commonly stock for ammo?

500grainsIf you have a 470, .500, 500/465 or even a .470, you can track down someone who has one of those and get 5 or 10 rounds of ammo for your hunt. Not so with wildcats or newbie rounds.
As for what is stocked in gun stores in RSA, I will have to rely on what our South African bretheren tell us as I can only personally comment on what can be found in Zim.
Have any South Africans seen .375 Ruger ammo on the shelf there?

CanuckThey don't even have 375 Ruger rifles in Canada yet, so I doubt the have them in RSA. But I doubt it will take all that long...I bet they have the WSMs in RSA. The Ruger is brand new...let them have a little time...

Paul HConversley there aren't alot of choices in factory rifles in 375 H&H, so one has to weigh things for and against. I'd say with the who knows how long demise of the Win M70, the Ruger M77 magnum really being too big for a 375H&H, and mixed comments on the CZ's, one has to balance out gun availability to ammo availability in the veld.
I'd say for domestic use, the 375 Ruger is the right round for the guns available. For international use, I'd have an H&H.

luv2safariI know that I always leave with the PH at least 5 rounds of each kind of ammo I bring along on safari, as well as antibiotics. Both seem well received.

For the time being at least, I agree that is the wiser choice.
But what do I know, eh? I took a 470 Mbogo and a 416 Taylor on my last safari.

I can't understand this harping on what happens if your ammo goes missing? I have been to a couple gun stores in SA and have found you could even find Weatherby ammo. Both had 06, 270, 7Mag and 300Mag. So what if they don't have 375 Ruger! Borrow or rent a gun from your outfitter. They all have rentals. Most of the ammo you take is a handloaded any way so how much good is factory ammo. I would love to see someone finding ammo for a double rifle in a small town. It ain't gonna happen and you'll be using the loaner 375. No big deal!

465H&HI went to a gun store in Harare a few weeks ago and got to see there gun and ammo room. I was surprised at how much 1960's era Kynoch double rifle ammo they had. The calibers I remember seeing were 450/400 3", 450 Nitro, 500/465 (several hundred rounds), 470, 500 Nitro and 475 No2 Jeffery among others I don't remember. Keep it in mind if you lose your DR ammo in route to Zim.
