Lott light?
Spent some time searching the reloading and favorite load forums for reduced-velocity loads in the Lott using the Speer 400 or the Remington 405 slugs.
Looks like Hog Killer listed 68 grains IMR 4895 and the Remington 405 for about 2112 fps.
Tank cited a reply from Accurate Arms suggesting XMP5744 loads of from 42 to 61 grains with 400-grain bullets.
Any other favorite Lott light loads with these jacketed plinkers? I'm looking to work my way up to the heavier stuff, and would also like to have some pleasant, accurate light loads that I can use to introduce my 14-year-old to big bore shooting.

May I suggest the 430gr GC Laser-Cast and about 32gr of 2400. That ran about 1580fps in a WM and was a pleasant load. It should work well in the Lott. Another nice "medium" load is the same bullet with about 43gr of AA5744. Neither load is position sensitive, and either should shoot under 2" at 50 yards. You and your son can go load and empty a Case-Gard 50 each week and work up. I have driven that bullet over 2300fps without leading.

gods be praised! TrailBoss has loads listed for the 458 WinMag. 18 grains get a 485 cast flat nose out of the muzzle at less than 1000 FPS.

it actually has loads listed to 860 FPS but I'd seat the bullet very deep in a Lott for that level of load. I shot the 18 grain load and recoil was insignificant. I think I'm going to use this to get fluent with the left handed action, then move on up.

I have one for you...

45 gr of W748 pushing a 710 gr cast at 1300 fps

33 gr or W748 pushing a 405 gr cast

45grains of AA5744 with a 400-450 grain cast bullet should get you 1500-1600fps.

Bill, I guess these guys do not have great reading retention. As no one has given you any data for the two jacketed bullets you asked about. Are you wanting lighter loads than my plinking load, you mentioned?

Thanks for the cast loads guys.

Keith: I'm just hoping to find a range of loads running from about 1800 up to your 2100 fps load that are not only pleasant to shoot but accurate with one of the 400-grain jacketed slugs.
I've got .459-.460 molds for my Trapdoor that I can cast bullets for really mild plinkers with -- and fool with BP loads in the Lott. I think the 14-year-old and his pals might find those fun.

Hogkiller,

you have to remember not all of us are cattle barons like you. Cast bullets will just smooth his barrel.
