500grainsTaking an Ibuprofen before the first shot, and another after 10 shots, is a good idea.

diesel_dudeWent out and shot my rifle
![[Big Grin]](images/icons/grin.gif)
I have to say I was a little nervous pulling the trigger for the firsttime, but was pleasanlty surprised! My first shot was a 650 woodliegh SN at 1675 FPS,very comfy! worked my way up to 2050 with the 650's,those were statring to get spicy, but not bad! Had two misfires,I belive the primers were seated to deep,I used a uniformer on those two particular cases. So I only shot one 750 FMJ that was at 1775,not bad! I am aqainted with my new rifle,so next weekend we go to the range to regulate the sights!

You need to shoot during lunchtime, then I'll get a chance to check it out.

MacD37Diesel_Dude, the load is a 750 gr solid, @ 2050 fps!!!!!!!!! Then let us know how you feel!

MacD37Hey Diesel, what does your rifle weigh? Is it a No1?
![[Confused]](images/icons/confused.gif)
05 April 2003, 15:59
diesel_dudeThis sounds nuts, but it weighs 9 3/4lbs! It has an integral muzzle break(which really works!),one mecury supressor in the stock, another one will be added when I take it back to get the final finish work done! I was a bit apprehensive when I went and picked it up,the gunsmith told me to start real light with my loads. I would say the first shooting session weht rather well, actually really fun to shoot,it sure does leave big craters in the ice! I will let you know how the 750's are! Damn imagestation still down,I would really like to post some pictures!

KMuleinAKMacD37 -- yes, it is a #1 with a 24" barrel - after seeing DD shoot his rifle, I can vouch that no charging propane tank in existence stands a chance within 75 yards

diesel_dudeHad a nice range session this afternoon. 750 at 2050fps was rahter pleasant! Even at 2100 the 750's arent all that bad! Get above 2200,holy smokes!135 grs rl-15 gives 2198fps
![[Eek!]](images/icons/shocked.gif)
out of my rifle, shoots spot on at 100yds,one more sight adjusting session before it goes back to be finished! It is amazing what 100fps feels like in terms of recoil! Really dont have any desire to push the 750's much faster 2100!

500grainsMay I recommend 2230 fps with 750 grainers as the ideal elephant velocity (it worked for me)?
Also, I recommend some flat nosed solids from
www.bridgerbullets.com. They are very accurate and I cannot wait to try them in the field.

RobgunbuilderCongrats on the Cannon! I think I fired the 585 NYATI at 2550FPS with a 750 gr Woodleigh. That was an impressive amount of recoil. Not intolerable, justy impressive. These things make very effective log splitters!-Rob
Diesel dude,
What is the deformed bullet next to the woodleigh in the photo? And what did it hit?
Welcome to the club and a real 577 too, not just a modern trash 585
500G,
I have missed news on these subjects for a while. Where can I catch up on your elephant adventures with the 585?
Karl.
09 April 2003, 04:20
500grainsKarl,
I shot a tuskless cow with the 585 nyati. It was day 4 of the hunt. We had been frustrated by ellies doing sneaking things like crossing a river to leave the hunt area. On day 4 we found a herd that included 4 tuskless.
So we moved in and I took a moving broadside lung shot at 25 yards. I shot through a big bush because that was the most open spot. Shot #1 was with a 750 grain woodleigh solid.
The ellie turned 90 degrees to run straight away and I tried to put a shot at the base of her tail. That was my instinct even though the PH had advised me to shoot her in the hip bone. My shot went just left of the tail, but did not break the spine. However, the shock from the bullet immobilized her hind end and she fell over. That was a 750 grain TCCI bronze solid (same as an A-Square solid).
Then the other ellies started running back and forth and trumpeting. One ellie pushed on the downed ellie and tried to help her up. We ran up the hill and out of sight to avoid a confrontation.
The other ellies moved off and we went to the downed ellie. I put 2 more shots into her for safekeeping, one in the top of the back down into the chest and one into the bottom of the chest. The other ellies heard the shooting and came running back, so we bugged out and returned for skinning only when the coast was clear.

diesel_dudeKarl- It is a 750 woodleigh FMj that hit a rather large rock that was buried in the backstop behind the target I was shooting at!

Dave Jamesdiesel,is there a reason for the "X" mark on the left side of the brass?
11 April 2003, 01:29
500grainsBPBB,
1. Is that ammo belt the one pictured here?
http://www.westleyrichards.com/access.asp?Type=Ammunition%20Wallets%20and%20Bags&ID=20011261614312. Is it for a 36" waist?
3. Is it new?
4. Do the prices above include shipping?
If the answer to each of the above is YES, I will buy your bullets and ammo belt. Thanks.

500grainsIf you'll take $145, then I will buy them.
Please email your mailing address.
Thanks.
11 April 2003, 13:25
500grainsOH, please confirm that the belt is new. Thanks.
11 April 2003, 18:28
diesel_dudeThe "X" on the left side of the case was an identfier for a couple of cases that I enlarged the primer flash hole,to see if it made a difference in ignition, really dont think it made much diference!
Pictures of the whole rifle coming soon,I will take before and after pics, right now all the metal is in the "white"

Actually I had one picture of the whole rifle, still working with my camera to get good pictures! Okay, the barrel is the only metal in the white,I planning on having it parkerized.
