Got home last night. Picked up the 470 NE Searcy on the way from the airport. Very nice man who owns the shop met me.

Is a field grade gun ... very, very simple ... downright plain. Would have been nicer with just a little scroll engraving. Absolutely beautiful piece of wood for a field gun. Very nice wood to metal fits.

Obviously strong ... Just a little blocky ... came in at just over 11 lbs. Triggers are great!

Loaded some light stuff to play with and test all of the steps and tools. 460 gr Ballisti-Cast FPGC bullets, over 55.0 grains of XMR 5744 using Fed 215's in Rigby & Sons cases. Should be somewhere between 1500 and 1600 fps.

There is a problem with the sizing die ... looks as if it was not polished all the way down the very long neck of the case. Have a note into the die maker now.

First quick six were shot at a big target at 45 yards standing. With this reduced load, it is a pussy cat! Shoots about 6" low. Yet the load is plenty for deer I'm sure. Means I can have FUN with this fella too.

Next step is to get the die thing sorted out, and make real loads, velocities, and regulation.

Going to be a fun summer!

All you need is Ruger Number 1 in 470 Nitro to go with it, especially given the pistol bullets now available and Hornady gas checks.

I can't understand why Ruger does not bring out the Number 1 in 470 Nitro as it seems to sell very well in 416 Rigby.

Mike, I bet Ruger could sell a lot of #1's in 470, 500NE too, maybe even a few 577's.

Ruger might consider the thread diameter too small to put out a "factory" 577. However, I think the 470 Nitro is similar in diameter across the bottom of the case to the 416 Rigby.

Are those CH4D dies? I have had 2 dies from them that were case scratchers, but when I sent them back, they polished the rough parts out and there is no longer a problem.

You can get front sight inserts from necg to raise point of impact.

An 11 pound 45-70 is a pop gun. A 5 pound 45-70+ (Ruger #1) could HURT!
