ErikDWink,
Marcel Thys & Sons made double rifles in Belgium.
A recent thread on Nitroexpress.com regarding Thys:
http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=...psed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1If you do a seach on NE, you'll come up with LOTS of posts regarding his guns.

WinkIs 20,000 Euros (around 24,000 USD) a reasonable price for the rifle pictured? The engraving (although the photo is too small to show much detail) looks high quality.

Yes, that seems like a fair price to me for a first-rate boxlock made by a well-respected maker in 100% condition.

That's really cheap!
Marcel Thys has trained generations of the best gunsmiths Europe has had and still has. He taught at Ecole d'Armurerie de Liège and at the same time had created a family owned shop where you could find the most beautiful piece of artistic craftmanship mankind has produced.
All these superlatives I use are below the level of praise Marcel Thys deserves and you know that hunting firearms do not rank on top of my dream list.

mehulkamdarI do wish that someone who knows Marcel Thys would request him to restart his website if he has started building his magnificent guns again. I may never be able to afford to buy one of his great creations but I am sure that I am not the only person who would like to admire his beauties.

I happily second my friend Edmond's salute to a great genius.

700 nitromarcel thys is no longer making guns he gone off he rocker its a genetic defect that not only affected sr but jr as well.
i know a guy who ordered a brand new 600 nitro from there he has the last one.

JPK700,
I am not so sure that is correct. Marcel Thys stopped making rifles under his own name after a disgruntled employee broke into his shop and stole all the guns in it that were in progress. The only guns that were saved were those out for engraving or proofing, etc. None were recovered I am told. I also was told that this event and its aftermath were hard on Marcel, as one might expect.
Marcel made good on all of the guns in progress and no customer was left short.
It is my understanding that Marcel continued to make rifles for G&H under G&H's name. I also came away with the impression that G&H helped Marcel make good on the customers rifles in progress which had been stolen. Noone would confirm or deny this, and its just what I took from a long conversation with someone at G&H.
There is the rumor that Marcel is making rifles again, but it is as yet unconfirmed. Some new guns of his are turning up here and there but I've also been told that a large retailer bought several before he ceased making them under his name and that this is the source of the new rifles.

You are the absolultly dumbest person on this Forum. Maybe second dumbest, next to cats. Where did you come up with that crap? I wouldn't talk about anyone else's genetics if I was you.

700 nitro
Thys is making rifles for G&H. Look on their website for some rifles and prices.

DavidReedNot a bad price as the new Bass Pro in Denver has Thys boxlock in .470 for $50,000 USD! The expert working there even informed me that the gun has a rear trigger so you can discharge both barrels at once in case of a charge...

Can anyone tell me if Thys double rifles are monobloc or chopper-lump construction?
12 January 2006, 06:28
JPKI've seen several of his rifles, and own one, but have only had the opportunity to check three.
One I can't recall for some reason, but I looked it over closely, it was a boxlock. The other two were chopper lump. Both of these are sidelocks.
For anyone interested, there is a Thys sidelock at Fine Firearms.
http://finefirearms.com/european.htmlThis rifle, a 577NE sidelock, is for sale in as new condition for $33,000.
I bought a Thys sidelock from Michael De Chevrieux, the owner, and he was staight up and a pleasure to deal with. His description of my rifle was conservative and hardly did the rifle justice.

WinkBent,
It seems that H&H and Purdey picked up on Grifnee in the mid-nineties and he now works for them.

Listen up Sonny,
Telling people someone is 'off their rocker' and 'so is his son' and it is 'genetic' when they are trying to deal with a very difficult situation in the most Honourable way possible
makes you a Class A Idiot.
Not everyone has had a bundle of money handed to them to piss away like you have. Some people actually earn there way in the World and contribute things of Beauty and Purpose. Some people actual leave their marks for future generations.
I know this is a foreign concept to you but the very fact that you can't be bothered to even try and communicate in a polite manner. Find it too much trouble to think before you speak and speak about what you know not brands you as an Idiot.
Time to put away the childish attitude and step up Adulthood.
