Guys, just bought my first big bore gun a pre-64 model 70 chambered in 375 H&H, my questions to you experts are what work would you suggest I have done on this to make it as best as it can be.

Well, check it for feeding and function first. Then fire at least 50 rounds through it.

Brian, good grab, and a worthwhile investment as well. As Rob mentioned, load the magazine and cycle the bolt both slowly and quickly with a load that you plan on using. Put a 1.5x5, 1.75x6, or a 2.5x8 and you're good to go.

Thanks, I got it for a great price as well, the bolt seems smooth, but have not had a chance to cycle ammo through it as they did not have the ammo I wanted on hand, and barel seems in good shape, but will have my gunsmith give it a good look, I bought leupold's new VXR with the fire dot redice in a 3X9 as I plan on using it for Elk and maybe Buffalo in Australia next year.

Can you please post some photos. Has it been used much? Does it have a steel cross bolt in the stock. If not you might consider installing at least one behind the front recoil lug and may be another in front of the pistol grip. A competent gunsmith should be able to do that without any trouble.

You'll enjoy looking over potential bullets.

For starters, I would suggest checking out the .375" Barnes 250 grain TTSX (.424 BC),
and keeping a close watch on what CEB is offering over the next weeks. (Cutting edge Bullets.) Many lead core options are available, too, of course.

Nikihunter, sorry I dropped it off to the gunsmith without taken pictures, will post pic's when I get it back (Can't wait to shoot it) 416, I am really leaning towards Federals premium safaris barnes triple shock, in 300 grain or the swift A-frames in 300 grains.

I just took my brown bear with 375 H&H Remington Safari grade 300g Swift A-Frame factory ammunition. First shot at 13 yards broke the right front shoulder (front quartering shot) tore up both lungs and ended up in the far hide just in front of the rear leg. I just weighed it, it weighs 299.5 grains, pretty damn good performance.



My Rem XCR II is chambered for 375 Weatherby (it also shoots 375 H&H), I'm thinking the extra 200 fps of the 375 Weatherby with this bullet is a fine idea, no problem with it holding together.

I am a tinkerer I guess..I would glass bed it, cross bolt it, you added a better pad, install a good NECG rear island sight, the Wisner is good..maybe even add a quarter rib..but thats just me, I like doing make overs.

Check for feed and function and I mean run lots of ammo, both solids and softs of various makes through it... A DG rifle needs 200 to 300 rounds through it IMO, if its feasible to do so..It is with me,
