So what should a 416 weigh?
In the spirit of the other thread on 375s...

How heavy should a 416 Remington, Rigby or Ruger be? Probably a 404 Jeffery as well.

To me about 9.5 to 10 pounds even, scoped but empty is about right.

Yep, my Ruger Rigby's way too heavy. But boy does it shoot! jorge

A 400gn bullet at 2335fps from my 404 Jeffery at 9 1/2 lb is comfortable.

That's good. thumb

Some weights for comparison, "dry weights" (no scope or rings, unloaded):

WB: Well Balanced
MH: Muzzle Heavy

.416 Ruger Hawkeye/20"/Hogue stock (factory): 8.0000 lbs ... WB

404 Jeffery M70 Classic/24" No.5 McGowen/Brown Precision stock: 8.5000 lbs ... WB

.416 RemMag M70 Classic/24"/walnut stock (factory): 9.1250 lbs ... WB

.416 Rigby CZ 550Mag/25"/"Kevlar" stock (factory): 8.9375 lbs ... Slightly MH

.416 Rigby CZ 550Mag/25"/Lux "hogback" stock (factory): 9.2500 lbs ... WB

.416 Rigby Ruger RSM 3rd gen./23"/ walnut stock (factory): 9.5000 lbs ... WB

.416 Rigby Ruger RSM 1rst&2nd gen./24"/walnut stock (factory): 10.7500 lbs ... Very MH

Weights and balances of above specimens weighed by yours truly, and recited by heart, off the top of my head. Wink

Instead of asking someone, one could do the math themselves. Find one of your rifles that has a tolerable recoil level and them match the weight of a 416, or anything else, to the recoil momentum and/or recoil velocity of the tolerable rifle. One could do that with any of the recoil calculators.

That's what I did when planning my 7.48 lb. 416 Taylors.

Will:
Want a 7.0-pound, express-sighted .416, easy?

Take the 5.50# .416 Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan barreled action out of the 2.5 pound Hogue stock.

Put it in a 1.5# Ruger canoe paddle stock
or a 1.5# Ruger Tupperware stock from an old Ruger M77 Mk II.

Voila! 7.0-pound dry weight .416.

I got you beat with no effort on my part.

Now, now. Don't be misleading!

Okay, I grant you that 2400 fps is going to be easier with the Ruger than the Taylor, BUT ...

my Taylor at 7.48 lbs. has one up and four down (so there!) and two inches more sight radius!

I don't think there is such a thing as the 416 Ruger as yet, is there?

Will,
You don't read much here do you?
I finally bought a .416 Ruger. No factory ammo as yet for me, but I have seen it on the shelf at Cabelas in St. Louis, before I had the gun:

I know from whence I speak about the weight. Take it as gospel, 5.50 pounds for the barreled action weight.
And is your sight radius with a peep on the rear, or a shallow V in the middle of the barrel? Wink

I'd make it as light as I can handle. Thats about 8lbs loaded for me. I have a rem 700 Big Game Synthetic 416 REM MAG about that light. Great rifle but may have it let it go to make room for my new 500 Jeffery. Safes getting too full and bank account too low.

My Sako with factory, wood Hunter stock and Leupold 1-4 weigh 8.6 pounds - probably about 9 pounds loaded. Recoil is heavy but manageable. Lou

Don't know where we would be without your input and guidance?

6.5 lbs in that little Winchester is easy to handle with the above loads. I lost a little velocity from 20 inches to 18 inches on some loads, but for me well worth the loss, for the gain in shorter and handy!

6.5 lbs is not so easy in the 458 B&M and the 50 B&M.

All kidding aside and no malice meant, but I am a late bloomer Will and I missed your trail to featherweight big bores! Would like to learn more of this please! wave
Thanks
Michael
