I am interested in purchasing a British Double. I want a rifle that I can shoot, not a collector's peice or a wall-hanger. I was wondering what such a rifle might cost?
I would prefer for one of 400 range NE calibers-but I'm not too picky. Rarity of ammo is NOT a concern. The condition doesn't have to be perfect, but I want a solid gun that is in good firing condition. Obviously, I don't have any interest in fancy engraving or a perfect stock finish, but it needs to be tight, good bores, and in reasonably good condition. I guess you could say I'm looking for a "workhorse".
If anyone out there can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Hallowell's has a double with a set of 577 NE barrels AND a set of 470 NE barrels for just $29,000 total.
Westley Richards has an antique I. Hollis 577/500 BPE double rifle for just $3500 in nice condition.
I'm no expert, but I can give you some websites of gun dealers that handle doubles.

Westley Richards (in Springfield, Missouri) always seems to carry a lot of 450/400 3" rifles. I visited their shop last year and handled several of these doubles. They were all good "working guns" that weren't too heavy and not too expensive. With ballistics similar to the .404 Jeffery, they make good buffalo guns.

That said, I have noticed a price increase on doubles recently and especiall in the popularity of the 450-400's that for years have been some of the real deals out there..Once you shoot the 450-400 you will become a believer, then when you kill with it you will seldom go beyond that caliber as it justs works so well..A rare combo of penitration, velocity and enough of each to just flat work, without all the noise and kick of th larger calibers....thats why I like it, it just does yomen like work...
I'm not saying it is better than the larger bores, it isn't, but its close enough fer Govment werk...
