Bill/OregonKodiak in 9.3X74 or .45-70?
Fellas, the oft-discussed Pedersoli Kodiak double rifles come in these two calibers (plus 8X57R). According to factory specs, the 9.3 comes with four-groove 22-inch barrels, 1:14 twist, and weighs 9.5 pounds. The .45-70 comes with six-groove 24-inch barrels, 1:18 twist and weighs just under 10 pounds. I think if a fellow wanted a big-bore double at a good price, either one would be a fine choice. But if one of them might someday end up in a gun case headed for Africa where buff might be on the menu, would it make more sense to buy the .45-70 and consider reaming to .458 RCBS or .45-110 or .450 NE, or just go with the 9.3X74r knowing it is generally considered a decent minimum for buff? Frankly, 95 percent of the rifle's work would be at the range, and maybe in the deer and elk woods.

jeffeossoBill,
no question, do it in 9.3x74r. it's LEGAL and it's not going to be a regulating nightmare. You'ld be better off buying in more powerful if you want a 450 or better.
I've put tons of thought into this, as I had been thinking about exactly the same thing. It would be a great learning exp, but not for the 2500 to get started on what basically would become a test mule
good hunting

<Rusty>Bill,
9.3X74R without any hesitation! I got to shoot Mac's Merkel in 9.3X74R. The 9.3X74R makes a fine double cartridge. The rifle looks and points like fine 410 double shotgun!
450 No.2 had a nice double in that caliber at our shoot two weekends ago. His had a detachable scope on it.

N E 450 No2Bill/Oregon I have used both calibers, and they are both very effective on North American game. Most of the experts would recommend the 9.3 over the 45/70 for buffalo. Neither is ideal, however. For a strictly N.A. fun gun the 45/70 is hard to beat, but I really like the 9.3x74R. Check out
www.westleyrichards.com They have a 450/400 3 inch Hammer Double Rifle by Tolley[$5500] The 450/400 is the best calibre for all-round use. Good for Deer to Elephants. Everybody likes that calibre, and that rifle will grow in value over the years. If you like the Hammer rifles

when you want something bigger there are 577 Nitro and 400/360 hammer rifles out there.
