I'm starting to load for .458 SOCOM with a friend of mine, and he had also commented on how Win 296 leaves so much of the case unfilled. We'll start experimenting with other powders, but for now, we're just loading up a bunch of blasting/demo ammo with Rem. 300 grain hollow points. Will be seriously starting to look into my AR-10 wildcat soon, that should be a real monster.

What happened to ASSCLOWN, Scott? Can't you pick one membership and stick to it?

As for your claim for sub MOA at 200 yds, I'd have to see that to believe it.

Here is some data for you.

CCI350 primer
Alexander Arms brass (Starline)

38 grains H110
Muzzle velocity - 1628 fps (avg of 20 shot string)
Extreme spread - 187 fps
Standard deviation - 58 fps

40 grains of H110
Muzzle velocity - 1873 fps (avg of 20 shot string)
Extreme spread - 201 fps
Standard deviation - 65 fps

42 grains of H110 blew three cases on this load. MV of each was greater than 2035 fps!! DO NOT USE < !--color-->
Muzzle velocity - 1983 fps (avg of 20 shot string)
Extreme spread - 197 fps
Standard deviation - 66 fps

Great cartridge and rifle, I am sure you are going to love it. It is easily capable of sub MOA accuracy at 200+ yards, just like Alexander Arms advertising says!

One little note about H110 and W296. During winter operation, ambient temperatures between 12 F and 35 F, I experienced a great many "fail to fire" occurences! The primers did not seem to have enough energy to ignite these two ball powders. The primers did go off, and they managed to lodge the bullet into the bore (resulting in a cleanign rod being used to knock the bullets out), but the powder did not ignite. Neither of these powders will allow for a good load density, resulting in considerable air space in the case, this is most likely another reason for the poor cold weather performance, that and temperature sensitivity. Both H110 and W296 are kinda dangerous when the temperatures get high in the barrel too, like they blow cases up!

My best results were obtained with IMR4198 and Rel 7, both compressed. The loads were 47.5 gr of IMR4198 and 53.5 grains of Rel 7. Both of those are pretty hot so you should reduce by 10% and work up, IF you want to try those two powders.

Got good results with IMR4227 and heavier bullets, it did not provide as good a velocity with the lighter bullets though as H110 or the slow IMR4198 and Rel 7 powders did.
