375 260 grain Accubond Penetration Test

Finally got the chance to test my Federal factory loads with the 260 gr. Nosler Accubond that I am going to take to Namibia in 2 weeks. I have been wondering if they would perform well for kudu, gemsbok, zebra, and maybe an eland. My fears were laid to rest after recovering these.

I made my box following a previous poster's directions. A cardboard box with water soaked newspapers was the medium. First used inner tube rubber to simulate skin, then 6" soaked wet paper, 1" hardwood board to be bone, then 6" paper, 1" board, 6" paper, and 1" board. Penetrated all the way thru to the last board for a total distance of 20 inches. The wound(?) channel was about 1 - 1 1/2 inches around all the way thru, showing tremdous disruption. Weights were 192 and 198 grains (about 75%) with perfect mushrooming back to the cannelure. Diameters were from 0.62 to 0.74 inches.

Tried to water trap one bullet in 5 gallon buckets but 3 wasn't enough. Exploded the 1st one, shattered the 2nd, and exited the 3rd.

Now if I can just do my part, I hope to have trophy pictures to show for it.

Thanks for the info. That's what I'm loading for my Namibia trip in July. Bob

Those particular bullets were from 2 separate boxes of Federal factory loaded VITAL SHOK. My rifle is a Rem 700 BDL SS with 24" barrel. My reloads which seem to provide the same performance in my rifle are either Win or R-P cases with 78.0 grains of IMR 4350. I plan to go to Reloader and test loads with that, when I finish shooting up all of this IMR (after I come back from Namibia).

Fantastic!!!

nice to see more or less real world that the accubonds ARENT relabeled BTs..

I've never seen a BT that you could find 50% of it, even if you were to count all the itty bitty fragments

Very Impressive. Should have routine and predictable performance on all manner of plains game. Good Luck.
