If you could have only one caliber for DG!

Dr. LouIf you could have only one caliber for DG!
I will go with the 375 H&H because I have one and am extremely confident with it. However, if I were going to buy another rifle, I'd chose the 416 Rem. Lou

MikeyBI'd probably load 400gr. bullets to 2200fps in a .416 (Remington/Taylor/Rigby/Whatever), or maybe a .404 Jeff. Okay, most likely the .404, just because it's so sexy. I think it's the most rifle I can shoot comfortably and practice with. .458 sized rounds with their extra 100gr. at similar speeds is still beyond my threshold.

GarBy404 Jeff or 425 WR with either round's bullets at about 2300 fps. Light recoil (relatively speaking, of course) and hard hitting. Plus I wouldn't have to go buy another rifle!

MARK H. YOUNGSince we are not talking about a rifle to shoot antelope at long range or anything smaller than a leopard I see no reason that the 458WM would not do very well as an all around DG rifle. A scope sighted 458WM with mono metal bullets of 450 gr going 2300 fps should do it all handily without requiring a very heavy, bulky and extremely hard kicking rifle as a platform.

R93LRS2I will divid DG in two.
First are bear and cats. For this group I choose my sweet little 458X2"American.
The second group are hippo, rhino, buffalo and elephant. Here the 500A2 would be my one caliber choice.

DGR ShooterI think the 458's offer the most versatility . The bigger bores are certainly better stoppers, and the smaller bores have an edge in the trajectory and shootability departments, but with bullet weights from 300-600gr. you can certainly find a load for whatever situation you might encounter. 400-450grainers for the bears and cats and 500-550grainers for getting up close and personal with the big nasties. No shortage of flavors to choose from (Win Mag, Lott, Rigby, Dakota, Weatherby ect...)but I think the Lott is probably the most practical.

MacD37Just about any cartridge from .375 cal up to 500 will do, if caliber is all that is considered! However, the cartridge is not all that is needed for a DGR rifle! A DGR is a package deal, and it should be the best in many ways to be a top of the line DGR.
If I were to use the rifle for nothing but dangerous game, then in my case, it would automaticlly be a S/S double rifle. If I were to hunt eveything from black bear to Elephant with this one rifle, then it would likely be a 450/400NE 3" with double triggers, manual safety, good express irons with a standing sight cut for 50 yds, and two flip-ups, one for 100 yds, and one for 150 yds. A 2-7X40 scope with a German post and crosshair, and illuminated reticle, in QD claw basis.
If I were limited to a bolt rifle, it would likely be a CRF Mauser actioned 404 jef, or a 416 Rem Mag, also with good Express Irons, with two flip-ups, and a standing rear sight, a 3-9X40 scope with the same reticle as the double, and also illuminated, and QD rings & bases.
With the Bolt rifle's scope as primary sighting system, and the Irons as back-up! The double rifle's irons as primary sighting system, and the scope as a speciallity sight.

N E 450 No2One calibre one rifle for ALL DG.
I would pick my 450/400 3 1/4" British double. It is scoped with a 1-4 S&B, with illuminated flash dot reticle, in claw mounts.
It has taken [with iron sights] skunks, armidillos, deer, wild pigs, caribou, black bear, cape buff and bull elephant.
With the scope it has taken baboons, warthog, fired an anchoring shot on a giraffe, and a lion.
So not only is it great for DG it is pretty good for what ever you run into.
For the "Modern Man" a scoped 450/400 is just about perfect.
