All my big bores are now wearing 2.5x leupold compacts.
Gentlemen just thought I would write some thoughts on vertical split rings Talley's/warnes and variable leupolds mated to magnum cz actions. Just can't seem to get the rear ring tight enough without binding the power ring up. Soooo to combat the problem I took the 2.5x leupold off my 45/70 and put the 1-4 leupold on it (this was meant for my .375). Now my three big bores .375, .416 & .585 all have 2.5x leupold compacts on them. I know that the 2.5x is not appropriate on the .375 H&H but I think that at least I will have familiarity between these rifles now. I am confident of making a hit on a roo sized animal to a 150 yards with a 2.5x compact at any rate. Any way I have tried various combo's to get the vertical rings/mag cz actions and variable leupolds to work without binding the power ring but all to no avail. Obviously with the fixed 2.5x's I can tighten the rings to the correct tension (no selector to bind).
My impending 9.3 cz will use cz 550 magnum mounts (if they fit) and a 2-7 leupold.
No particular issue or questions here (just my ramblings) but if anyone else has some thoughts or opinions I would like to here them.

jeffeossoPC,
CONGRATS!!
I am thinking of putting a 2.5on my 500... but I don't think that's goign to happen any time soon..
DId they ever DROP and you take off the brake?
jeffe
Jeffesso,
I still have not fired it without the break this year perhaps......
the 2.5x will work great on your 500 it's almost like an express scope

pertinaxI just wish they made the 2.5X with multi-coat 4. The thing's solid as a rock, and the eye relief is, as is well known, as good as it gets. But the lenses' coatings stink. Compared against any multi-coated scope at night, and the 2.5X looks awful.

AtkinsonPertinax,
Sure your not getting a little carried away with this lens coating thing...The 2.5 Compact is for shooting Buffalo, Elephant etc. at 10 to 50 yards on a big bore rifle because it holds up under the recoil of the big kickers and the muzzle brakes which add another dimension to a scope comming apart...
I assure you the lens are just fine for the intended purpose.....Of course I grew up in the old days when scopes were Weaver and Lyman Alaskans, but they seemed to work also...even when they blurred...
Today with my .375 cz and 2.5x scoope I shot a hare at 40 yards off hand and a fox at 80 yards off hand. So you can shoot animals other than buff an elephante with 2.5x leupold scopes

. I also happen to like the compact look. Both animals were shot with Hornady 300 gr round noses.

pertinaxRay,
You're absolutely right. Not its niche. It is irrelevant for its intended use.
Pertinax
Pertinex,
I had no trouble knocking that fox off with the 2.5x offhand at 80 yards or the hair at 40 yards. Funnily enough I seem to shoot better with the lower powered scopes. I am not quite sure why maybe it is the old "aim small miss small" theory Mel Gibson used in the Patriot.

AtkinsonPC,
I also shoot much better off hand with a low power scope...It is because your wiggle and wobble is not magnified however the power of the scope...same with iron sights..up to a certain range, with me irons are Ok up to 200 yards then a scope wins hands down.

mstarlingGuys,
Yesterday Premier Reticles delivered a new Leupold Compact 2.5 fitted with their #4. Is for the .416 Rigby CZ 550. Scope looks good.
The vertical line seems to be offset to the right about one line width. Is this normal or acceptable?
thanks,
I wouldn't think so but I am not sure. Ring premier up and check it out. There a great scope.
