TellyThe lives of the Ruger RSM
I know that the Ruger RSM started with the barrel band sling swivel in the stock and had a 24" barrel. Then they went to the band on the barrel and 24" barrel. Now the have a 23" barrel. Is that only on the .375 and others have the 24" or ? Also, what is the Ruger Africa with the gold inlay of game on the floor plate? Any Ruger collectors/experts here?
Thanks,
Telly

BuliwyfThe current Ruger M77 Deluxe Magnum chambered in .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, and .458 Lott all have a 23" barrel. Don't know what barrel length the .338 Lapua has.
The Ruger Custom Shop offers customized floor plates that drop-in.

Canuck,
Your rifle is the "First Generation" RSM with heavy 24" long barrel (.820" at the muzzle) and with the front sling base coming through the forearm on a barrel band inletted into the forearm.
The "Second Generation" RSM was a few years after that, with front sling base on a barrel band out beyond the forend, same barrel.
The "Third Generation" RSM came a few years later still, with 23" barrel length and 0.750" muzzle diameter.
Does your "First Generation" RSM have the same recoil plate bedding sysyem as all the others?

MJinesAnother important distinction, the earlier models are push feed whereas the current models are controlled feed.

RIPCanuck,
Thanks for the quote.
The Ruger M77
RS in .458 WinMag (pre 1990) was a different rifle than the
RSM which started in 1990 IIRC.
The added M must designate magnum, eh? I think the RSM bolt is about 7/16" longer than the older RS.
Since the RS was a pushfeed and tang safetied affair, there is no confusion with the RSM.
