9.3X62 Conversion to .404 Jeffery
9.3X62 Conversion to .404 Jeffery
I refuse to pay over $2400 for a CZ .404 Jeff. It just occurred to me that why couldn't I just buy a CZ 550 American in 9.3X62 or even .30-'06 and have it converted by a good smith including, but not limited to:
Expanding bolt face
Install new extractor
Mill the rails
Work on magazine box to ensure perfect feeding
Any experts out there with a comment?

D HumbargerYou might do well to also consider buying a Winchester M70 CF in 375 & just rebarrel it to 404 Ne.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Charles_HelmOr a Model 70 .300 RUM if you can find one.

vapodogYou can also use the MRC 1999 for the .375 H&H for the 404 Jeffery.......and it's a proven action for that chambering.

congomikeHow about a CZ550 in 375H&H and have it rebarreled. I think that would be the easiest and with the price that M70's seem to be climbing to, the cheapest.

Or have it rebored and rechambered to 404 Jeff by Dan Pedersen for ~$265.
Good hunting,

fredj338Find a used M70 in a RUM & rebarrel. That's what I did & it works great, even used the original stock w/ a few mods.

Yep,
M70 is great.
The CZ 550 Magnum box for .375 H&H is perfect for the .404 Jeffery, and that rifle is great in .404 Jeffery, holds 5 down in the box.
Mr. Sour Grapes got a lemon. Mine is perfect and only cost about $1500 with a McGowen 10" twist barrel from the CZ-USA factory.
Long throating the .404 Jeffery CZ would add performance. Many old hands in Africa did this, seating the bullet out to fill a Magnum action box. This really makes sense with the banded and grooved and "extra-cannelured" bullets available today.
.404 Jeffery on a CZ 550 Medium action is a bad idea, weakens the action and requires extra box and feed work.
Thanks for the info gents...ScottW
