jsl3170Capstick rifle
On the back cover of "PHC's Africa" there is a pic of a rifle he describes in text as being made for him by Hoffman Arms of NYC I believe and he further indicates it was set up to be 5+1. I don't have a pic to post but if anyone has or can examine it what do you suppose are the barrel specs? It looks like a 26" length but am trying to get an idea as to size. Guessing .625 at the muzzle?
Thanks.

jsl3170found one. thanks shakari!
http://www.shakariconnection.c...-capstick-books.htmlI have one of his old videos that shows him describing his rifle in detail. It has a detachable mount with a command post Bushnell scope. If you are trying to duplicate the rifle, I would be happy to lend the video to you.

BaxterBI believe that is from Continental Arms in NY, not Hoffman.
I have both the book and video as well. I have always wondered about the front sling stud position on this rifle.
I think you are right on the 26 (maybe 25 inch barrel) but if I use the scope tube as a 1 inch reference I get .48 on the muzzle and a 22 inch barrel, no way. If I assume the scope is 30mm, I get .566 muzzle and about 25.5 inch barrel, don't think so. But if I assume barrel is 26 from ring to muzzle, I get .600 for the muzzle. I think you are damn close with the .625 number. It is clearly not the big fat barrels found on Mid 70's, it's much more slender.
Surely it is no smaller than "Generic No.3 Sporter" which has muzzle diameter:
0.625" at 24" length
0.615" at 25" length
0.605" at 26" length
Weatherby actually uses such a featherweight barrel on their .378 WbyMag factory rifle.
That is as skinny as I would ever go on a .375 H&H: No. 3 sporter
It did well on my old .375 H&H with "Brown Precision Pounder" (1-pound) stock.
Rifle weighed 6.75 pounds with 24" barrel and Pre-64 M70 action.
If you have a wood stock you need a heavier barrel than No.3 Sporter,
or you need to add some lead to the forearm to make it balance properly.
