<JB WI>Copper fouling in .416 Rem Mag
I've been shooting my Win M70 .416 Rem Mag and am finding a lot of copper fouling on the rifling near the muzzle. It may be throughout the length of the barrel for all I know, but I can't see it there.
I have used Remington Bore Cleaner solvent on a patch over a .416 diameter brush, but that didn't remove the fouling.
What do you people recommend for such a situation? For what it's worth, I'm shooting Trophy Bonded Bearclaw's (400 grain).
Out of curiousity, does anyone use the electronic device made by Outers to remove copper fouling? Thanks in advance for input.

AtkinsonJB,
The big bores are really bad about fouling and of course its easily detected due to the size of the bore and the amount of copper is more because there is more surface area..Also the jacket material is normally very soft and malible and that adds to the problem...
I clean mine with Barnes CR-10 as that is the best and strongest cleaner on the market. They still have a copper wash in them..I have heard from some sources that the electronic cleaners have frosted some bores and ruined them, I don't know but do not intend to find out...
Clean them as good as you reasonably can and forget about it, your not shooting benchrest or varmints, so it won't change much if you don't get every last bit of fouling out of it,IMHO.

DB BillI've used the Outer's equipment and while it works it tends to take a long time and it's messy. I normally use Sweets to get out the copper (Barnes CR-10 is good too) but if several applications don't do the job I get out the JB paste. It does a great job and no matter what you hear it isn't tough on barrels.
You want to be careful about letting copper build up in your barrel as too much can be the cause of pressure spikes.
I'm shooting an M70 Win 416 rem mag with stainless steel. I have bought nearly every cleaner I've seen mentioned on this board. For me, Hoppe's 9 and Barnes CR10 have worked
as good as any. I have found the Hoppes works a lot better if I let it set for a few
minutes. I apply the Barnes with both patches and directly on a bronze brush. This
combination is really working well for me.
I have also noticed that now that the barrel is getting broken in (120 rounds or so) its taking less time to get the copper out. Same thing happened with the 300 win mag and 375.
Hope this helps.

<Don G>My M70 copper fouled badly in spite of firelapping it twice. It finally is easing up after over 600 rounds total through it.
Barnes CR-10 followed by Hoppes #9 and RemClean is my recipe. I NEVER leave the CR-10 in the barrel more than two or three minutes.
Good luck.
