I'm not talking about NFA or "Assault" pieces or anything from countries with sanctions against them.
I just mean, let's say I'm in a British gun shop and see a double rifle I like. How hard is it for me to bring it back to the U. S.?

Nickudu may have more info for you.

P.S. What the hell are you going to do with one of those frigging right-hand doubles?

What I'd really be interested in picking up is one of those Zastava left-handed Mauser 98's that are being imported here. You mentioned Deerdogs has got one. I just didn't want to say left-handed Mauser for the 33rd time.
Sounds like a pain. Impulse buying sounds as if it's out of the question. I suppose if I knew ahead of my trip what I wanted and from which shop, I could get Form 6 approved?
Having done that, can't I just check the gun in my baggage and bring it back with me?

Customs requires proof that you owned a firearm you're traveling with prior to leaving the country (Form 4457, Bill of Sale, state or local registration certificate, etc.). If you could produce credible proof of prior ownership...
BTW, an action would be much more convenient to pack than a barreled action or complete firearm.
