mart400 Whelen update
After all this time I finally got around to having the rest of the work done on my 400 Whelen. Had the barrel band swivel, front sight, rust bluing and drill and tap for a Lyman 48 completed. I'm pretty happy with it. The pictures aren't that great but it really has a nice patina. Kind of a pre war well aged look to it. Thanks for looking.

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." JDA-CODude - If that handle was on the other side, I'd head up to AK and steal it from you!
The 400 Whelen would be my next rifle if I was a hand-loader. Really like the patina finish. That thing ought to handle anything on this continent!
Well done amigo!

RIPThat is a beautiful rifle.
Way to go, Mart.
Townie Whelen would be proud of you.

Is that a "Classic" M70 or what?
Double-entendre intended.

martThanks fellas. JDA-CO, The gunsmith who did the bluing said the same thing. It has been my favorite project and is now my favorite big game rifle. I am supposed to do a fly out brown bear hunt this spring. It will be doing the honors I hope.

JDA-COHey Mart - Can you get properly stamped brass for the 400 Whelen?

skl1Nice, Mart. Great project.

theback40Very nice!
Do you have any loads worked up for it yet?

martYes properly head stamped brass is available from Qual Cart. It's not cheap but it is available. I have about 160 rounds of it and around 120 rounds of the old Norma 30-06 cylindrical as well as 80 rounds of fire formed LC match brass. I'm pretty well set.
As far as loads my favorite load is 58 grains of H4895 behind the Woodleigh 400 or Hornady 400 grain RN. There is another thread going on the 400 Whelen where there are listed a lot of loads.
