Remington 700 458 WM to 458 Lott?
Can a Remington 700 458 Win Mag be converted to a 458 Lott?

No problem in the conversion, but you better figure out how to add a second barrel lug, Steel Bed it and put some recoil reducers in the stock as well as a new de-accelerator pad. I converted one years ago to a 450 Ackley and it broke the stock in about three rounds.-Rob

Wow, looked at one today and the stock looked stronger that. Thanks for the info

Rob,

Did you need to relieve the stock around the tang?

Did the split occur from the recoil lug acting like a splitting maul, or did it happen elsewhere?

As I remember the stock split at the tang and smashed the wood just behind the recoil lug internally. I too thought it would hold up for a few shots before it was Glass bedded. I was wrong!-Rob

I am looking very hard at this combination
458mag-458Lott, it seems to me the best of both worlds for the Africa hunter. Those 500 grain bullets going 2300fps can't be a let down on the other end of things. I would think they did quite well on big dangerous animals. One would still be able to shoot the 458 mag with lighter and smaller loads. Getting factory ammo shouldn't be a hard thing to do or would it in say Africa?

Getting anything in Africa is hard.

To the best of my information, you will not be able to buy any ammo in the following countries:

Tanzania
Ethiopia
Chad
Central African Republic
Zambia
Mozambique
In Zimbabwe there are a couple of places to buy ammo, but there is no way to be sure they have what you will need. They don't carry oddball stuff.

In RSA and Namibia you wil find ammo. But most people do not go to those countries for dangerous game.

The Lott is about the perfect chambering, but I would look long and hard at using a Remington M700. Yep, I know. there have been endless debates between M700 and M70 actions, but I build rifles on both, and other actions. A proper serious rifle absolutely needs Mauser type feeding. I have several M700's in work now, from 375 to 416, and several M70's, Mausers and CZ550's, but my final recommendation for a DGR is a action with Mauser type feeding.
