450 Watts
Gents:
Did someone here want some information on .450 Watts brass or ammo? Maybe some with the original Watts headstamp? This seems vaguely familiar but I can't seem to find it. Or, maybe my mind is a bit foggy.
Thanks for your help.
Cal

I'm interested in the 450 Watts. It was the preferred round of Ben Forbes and Glen Morgan. 2 bear guides from Sitka. I don't NEED one but I like the history of the round. It produced lots of spectacular one shot stops on big bears at close range.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Thanks for your replies.
I seem to remember someone looking for info and/or making a statement that there never was any brass head stamped .450 Watts.

I was a friend of Jim and when he passed I bought most of his rifles, including the first .450 Watts and two lever actions of .450 Alaskan and .411 Alaskan, and also shorter versions of the Watts round that became the .458 Winchester. I also received dozens of boxes of unprimed brass and 600 grains Barnes bullets in two jacket thicknesses. All are now gone except the one box of brass I keep for a memory of Jim.

My book on Jim is sold out. I printed 1200 copies and the last four sold a month or more ago. If you two gents are interested in the history of the Watts round, send me your post address and I will photocopy the chapter on Jim's cartridge development and send it to you.

Even though I own Jack Lott's .500 nitro double rifle, Lott took Jim's round and, 22 years later (1949 to 1971) shaved .005 off it and called it his Lott cartridge. Jack got all the attention as he was so well known, but Jim was the soft spoken originator who never got the national credit he deserved for being the first of many cartridges designs.

If I can be of service, let me know via PM or email directly at <pappas@mtaonline.net>

Cheers,
Cal
