Although my project No.1 is not a big bore, I know many of you have customized No.1's. I would like to do an inlet safety on mine, but have never seen one. Do any of you have a No.1(or pictures of) with an inlet safety. Looking for a pictures of the tang and button it self, and also from the side with the butt stock off. Or better yet, a 'how to' on the process.

Hamilton Bowen of Bowen Classic Arms does an excellent inlet tang safety on the Ruger No.1 although it is somewhat expensive at $495. There's a small picture of one on his web site at:

Check with SSK Industries and Carolina Precision Rifles; they both work on #1s.

Thanks, Steve. I had forgotten about the Picture on Bowen's site. It looks to me as the origonal safety button is used in this mod. Which answers half my questions. I wish he had a picture of the No.1's internals on his site.

George, I know SSK does some good work. There is a No.1 at J&G Sales chambered in .600JDJ. I will have to ask to see it next time I am in there to see if it has an inlet safety on it. JDJ is a working guy, I would not want to be asking him how to do a project when I do not intend to give him any work.

I am doing all this work my self. This is part of one my final projects. I have a good idea of the internal changes nessary, but it would be nice to have a picture. My No.1 is on of my favorite guns, but I am not affraid to take an end mill to it.(I know a few good welders just in case )

You do not need to go to the expense of an inletted safety.
I shoot my 7lb9oz 500ne with a modified safety.
I had the safety filed down to an oval button about 1/16" high and then a light pattern of chequering filed in. Very similar to a high quality english shotgun safety. In all less than an hours work excluding re-blueing the part.
