<Jrgen>500 Nitro Express from 50Basic brass ?
I bought some 50 Basic brass from BELL recently and was trying to make them into 500 Nitro, some differences indded ! I cut it to length (3") and sized it with a 50/70 die , but it was too big in dia. in the middle (last quarter was a bit too small , in front of the rim) I made a die to size down the middle part , but there was still something wrong, the gun didn`t close. Stupid as I sometimes am , I didn`t measure the rim thickness !!! According to my books it is only about 1 mm thick , that`s almost the half of the 50Basic case , is this possible ??? Does anyone have a measurement for me on this ?? Thanks , Jrgen

From A-Square's reloading book the diameter of the 500 Nitro rim is .655". The rim thickness is .040".
Hope this helps.
It should be a simple job, if you know someone with a lathe, to face off the case head then adjust the primer pocket depth. Or maybe turn the front side of the rim????

GrandpasezYou want to take the brass off of the front of
the rim, so as not to thin the web of the base.
If I had them here,I could do it on my case
spinner lathe. You can do it on a small regular lathe by clamping chuck on the mouth with bullet
in it for support and live center in pocket. No
powder or primer. Then thin rim from front with lathe tool. These are good cases to make 500
from as the web is usually thicker than older style cases.Ed.

<Jrgen>Now a big and hearty "THANK YOU" to all you guys !I measured the rim thickness after I turned it down from the front (bullet in mouth, live center in primer pocket)it is 0,045" now , the gun closes !What a difference ! I`ll load some cases with a fairly mild starting load and a 580gr. lead bullet , we`ll see if my shoulder survives !
