470 Capstick Targets - graphics
Below is a link to a photopoint album containing photos of targets that I shot with my 470 capstick, plus pics of the rifle.

The first target is a group of 3 500 grain Trophy Bonded Sledghammer solid ahead of 84.0 grains of IMR 4064.

The second target has 2 different groups on it. The group marked "A" is 90 grains of Reloader 15 behind a 500 grain woodleigh soft point. The goup marked "B" is 85 grains of IMR 4064 behind a 500 grain woodleigh soft point.

The largest group is 3/8" x 1/2" when measured center to center.

By the way, no matter what I try I cannot get the pics to post here, dag burn it!

Phew! That baby really wants to shoot Danny.
What a great start. Did you get any velocity readings? Tell me a bit about your rifle.
I like the look of it.

see if this works

You need to select one of the individual pics, and double click. Then right click on the image to get the internet address of the photo, select and copy the address. Then type and it should show up.

Paul H,

Thanks! I will try that and see if I can carry the operation through successfully. :-)

Nick,

The rifle is:

action: VZ24 military 98 mauser opened up
magazine: Sunny Hill extra deep magazine box
trigger: original 2 stage military trigger from a German Nazi period mauser (which I happen to like)
barrel: Pac-Nor super match grade stainless 1.2" diameter straight cylinder, 25" including brake
brake: Bryner brake with internal chamber
stock: English walnut, pachmyr decelerator shotgun pad (I like a soft pad)
mounts: Leupold QR rings & bases
scope: 2.5x Leupold compact for hunting, 3-9x Leupold for working up loads.

No velocity readings yet. I need new batteries for my Oehler. Next time...

This may be a stupid question, but does the barrel get bigger past the forearm? It may be an optical illusion. Great looking group!

The barrel is 1.2" straight cylindrical. The illusion you see is caused by the teeny tiny lens on a cheap compact camera.

500,
What's the total weight of the field ready rig? And how much should one expect to spend on a rifle like this, without the opening up of the action part?

500grains,
Have you played with reduced loads, say around 2100fps?

500,

That's quite a poodle-shooter, what's the game? Buff? Sure looks good.

500 grains,

What is the muzzle velocity of your loads ?

Good Hunting !

I have not used a chronograph on it (next trip to the range), and I have not played with reduced loads. The recoil is so light (25-06 category) that reduced loads seem unnecessary. With an 8" drop long funnel i have no trouble getting the powder in. And it takes a while for that barrel to heat up!

Hi 500grains,
I noticed your post on the African section where you mentioned pressure problems with A-Square brass and not with other brass. I had the same thing happen with my 500A-Sqaure brass from A-Square. The problem is bad brass not pressures in your rifle. The run of brass I had from A-Square would give sticky bolt lift with a 600 grain bullet at 2250 fps. When I fire-formed Weatherby brass the problem went away. A-Square eventually replaced the brass after trying to say my rifle was at fault and he couldn't give me any answers as to why this would happen without having the internal specs on my barrel and a bunch of other BS. I just wonder about the poor guys heading off to Africa with their 500 A-Squares with factory loads to 2450 fps made from this same run of brass. A recipe for good pry bars. 470 Mbogo
