If you had a pre 64 model 70 action

TerryRIf you had a pre 64 model 70 action
What rifle would you make/have made?
It was a 300 win mag.

577NitroExpressI had the same question about a year ago.
Since the action is viewed as one of the best made American actions, I went with the caliber viewed as "all American" (My opinion): .30-06
With a Krieger Barrel, Sunny Hill bottom metal, Talley Scope mounts, Leuopld Scope and NECG open site, it is an "All American" rifle.

If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming... If it was once a 300 H&H, 300 H&H to .375 H&H on a Pre-64 M70 is as slick and easy as it gets. Holds 4 down in the box and feeds with no modification to the action needed. Mine is named "Uru."

fredj338It would make a fine .375h&h w/ some mods. You could stay w/ the 300wm length & go w/ one of the Dakota mags. The possabilities are endless.
577NE, what does he do w/ the 300wm bolt face?

GeorgeS.458 Win. Mag., or a .416 Taylor if you don't mind a wildcat.

.375 Ruger: All American
This is now the only proper choice for a 300 WinMag Pre-64 M70 for a most versatile cartridge that is here to stay. The Queen is dead. RIP Queen .375 H&H.

Should be about as easy as 300 H&H to .375 H&H and give better ballistics, and no bolt face change needed.

gumboot458,, ,Perhaps I,m mistaken but the ones I,ve seen were all , long actions with a blocked off magizine .sp,? . So the possibilities are almost endless.....if yours is a long action , then the 416 Rem mag. would be a great choice ....With a 400 gr bullet @ 2150 fps its a great deer and hog , black bear , ect. ect. round . With a 300 gr Barnes X @ 2900 fps it is great for things near or far ...The 458 win mag is wonderful ..I was shooting my Interarms Alaskan yesterday and was reminded that it isn,t bad in the recoil dept. no cob on this one ,.,. { I don,t always want people to think I,m a woose } and it sure makes nice big holes in trees. The 416 Taylor is great also..... if all these are kept around 8-8.5 lbs scoped and full , they are fun to lug around and ruin less deer meat than the average 06 ...The 375 is a classic model 70 caliber tho.. ???.. The only 375 H&H that I want is a model 70 ....What does URU mean ??
.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
My 30-06 became a 35 Whelen, with a Douglas barrel, a matte blue finish all over and the original wood. Winchester never chambered the 35 Whelen in a Pre-64 M70, so it is neat to have one made up as a faux factory rifle.
If I were to do it again with a 30-06 action, it would have to be the .395 AMERICAN, which will outperform the .375 H&H as an elephant basher, using .395/340-grain GSC FN's.

luv2safariMy extra pre-64 30-06 is getting re-barreled to "300 Magnum"...300 H&H with a chery original barrel a very nice fellow sold me recently. Dennis Olson will do the work, as he did with another '06 to 375 H&H. You might consider 300 H&H as a classic chambering.

460wbyI have one.
I buildt a 338 RUM on mine, but I now think I'd like a slightly longer magazine for that round. It shoots great though.

congomikeDreaming, it would be a 404 Jeff...staying on the practical side, a 416 or 458 AR.

RobgunbuilderOne of the nicest rifles I ever built was a .450 Ackley on a pre-64 M70. I still have it and the combination of that neat slick action and the Ackley performance in a nice piece of walnut has always been in my mind one of the guns I'll never trade. That says alot!-Rob

Given that it is one of the better price/quality CRF magnum length actions suitable for a dangerous game rifle, the choices should be in consequence: .375 H&H (or .375 Weatherby), 404 Jeffery or 458 Lott. I would use a standard length action for a .375 Ruger.

low_techNot to steal the thread, but does all of the above apply to a Mod 70 classic?
I have a Mod 70 300WM classic(LH) that will maybe be a 375HH at some point, approximate cost?

p dog shooterIf I had Model pre64 action I would sell it to some one who thought they are the cats meow.
Take the money from the action and what it would take to barrel and stock it.
Then buy a couple of stainless Rugers do some stock and trigger work and have better rifles.
If it has what it takes then why not go for a .505 Gibbs

Dave, I have a special project in mind for Duane. And it won't be on a Model 70 action, as good as they are.

Are you on drugs all the time or just now?? There is nothing about a Ruger that is better. They are a very poor copy!

I too will take the pre '64....you can have ALL the rugers, investment casting and poor trigger/safety design to boot.
