Anyone hunting with a .405 Winchester this season?
If so what will you be hunting, what gun will you be using and what load...factory or handload (bullet make, weight velocity)?

I have a Ruger #1 stainless/laminted and a Winchester 95 that I should be using in Pennsylvania for deer and black bear this year..up to this time I have not hunted with either. As I was given 7+ boxes of factory Hornady ammo with the M95 and my reloads are running the exact same velocity I will probably just use the factory ammo as I don't have the time to run up some more reloads...

...and U?

I'll be using my #1-B with a 24" Douglas barrel and a 375gr. Beartooth .412" bullet at @ 2,000fps. Probably just on whitetail deer, but we may get to pester some pigs too. Big Grin

I should take mine to Idaho for my black bear hunt, but since grouse are in season at the same time my Blaser D 99 Duo is the logical choice..

However I will use my 1894 Win in 405 WCF for deer and wild pigs this deer season.

I will use the North Fork 300gr Soft, as I just need to kill something with a NF Soft. Big Grin

Rick...how long have you had your custom .405 and what have you taken with it?

Tony...you have a takedown M95 don't you...I'm sure with the way you pack your SUV that one more TD case won't be noticed... Or maybe you should condsider a trailer... clap Have you put a peepsight on it yet?

Bob,

I've had it for about four years now. It's just a stock 1B with a Douglas .411 barrel screwed on (it started life as a 7mm Rem Mag, another one bit the dust) and a 1-4x Leupold scope but it thinks it's a varmint rifle. Wink

I've only taken one big blue wildebeest and one little whitetail doe with it so far. It's a delightful little rifle that I need to take hunting more often but there are so many rifles and so little hunting season.

I will take my 1895 takedown this year for whitetail. Factory ammo.

Mine may get borrowed by a friend and used on a bison cow. Load would be a 400gr Woodleigh SN at 2080 fps.

Bob my 1895 is a Take Down. I like it a lot, but with grouse in season, I will not leave the cabin without a shotgun. Big Grin

Or you could just take a 357mag revolver along...hehehe

Tony, are you going back this year? How are Stitch & Joanee doing? PM or email me so I don't jack this thread.

Since you killed your bear with the 405 I do not think you are hi jacking the thread.

Last I heard they are doing fine. I am going back up there in a few days, but I will be hunting on my own. My buddy has a cabin up there, he will be hunting elk and I bear and grouse.

I hope I get as lucky with my shotgun as Adrianne did with her 357. Big Grin

I do know a bunch of my buddies are hunting with Joannie and Stitch next June.
I will be in camp with them as I will be hunting with one of their sons who is too young to hunt bear by himself.

I will try mine (New Winchester 1895 405 WCF) on some Alabama whitetail again this year. I sent mine off last year to Fred Zeglin at Z-HAT to have some express sights installed and to Robar Ind. to have it coated with NP3. I still use factory ammo from Hornady. Amra

RJM: Hope to cow elk hunt w/ '95 TD. Will shoot NEI cast bullets. The rifle shoots very well. Because of aging eyes I have installed a vintage reciever site (peep). Going to Tz next week and would love to take that rig w/ me. Am taking ..........416 rigby and a Lott. Dr.C.

AMRA,

Don't tease us, please post pictures of what sounds like a neat rifle.

My only wish for the M95 that I have is that Winchester had drilled and tapped the receiver for peep sights.

Thanks for all the replies so far...

I think the 405Win is a terrific chambering. I have loaded my Encore with 300gr X bullets to just a tad under Hornady velocities and it has performed marvelously on a bear and whitetail.

In both cases it was bang flop, not one step in either case. After that I bought a gorgeous 1985 but found I couldn't do so well with open sights with my ageing eyes, and couldn't bring myself to drilling a scope mount on a spectacular rifle, so I sold it to Greyghost.

I have the barrel set up for pig hunting now, with a surefire light so when it is dusk and the pigs come in, I can punch through that gissle plate. The X bullet is devastating. what a fun cartridge.

"Most" of the 95 remakes (405 or otherwise) are not drilled and tapped for any type of receiver sight. Only the very latest run is.

....most correct unfortunately.... I have one of the early runs of the "new" ones.
