Also, my two best surviving friends are in LE in Zim...Mr X who writes for African Hunter and the head of police Forensic balistics... Now 465H&H came to Zim instructing in IPSC... I remember that- late 80's the first time...you....

You won't hear from Ray here. He is more into cut and run.
Do any of you guys remember on HA when Ray drove to Wyoming to punch some one out for calling him a liar about his African Hunting?
If I remember correctly the guy said he lived around Jackson WY and posted quotes from Ray on Hunt America about how excited Ray was to have finally gotten to Africa the first time (in the mid 90's I believe)and then later quotes with the number substantially higher.
Anyway, Ray was pissed and the guy gave Ray directions to his house and dared him to have the balls to show up. Ray drove over there and followed the directions and ended up in the middle of some cow pasture miles from anywhere. It was then that he figured he had been had.
Ray blustered on about how the guy was chicken shit etc and it turned out the guy lived in Conn. and had just given Ray some directions that he had used one time to hunt in Wyoming
Pretty funny and Ray never got it.
Ray has never understood that what you say is around for ever and when you make up stories all the time people remember. And then they laugh at you and your buffoonery.

I wondered if it was just me, or if there was really something out of order with what I was reading this past year. Looks like I wasn't too far off the mark after all.

LJSFound them. Loaded by Superior Ammo with Trophy Bonded solids. Brass has no head stamp. If I remember correctly, Superior uses straight wall 375 cylinder cases. Full box of 20 rounds. How does $80 sound shipped?

Michael AliulisSounds fine to me, pm your address and how you would like payment.

Ray,
I am horribly confused and don't feel like you are telling me the truth. Is Ganyana mistaken? Were you using an alias back then? Was your first African hunt back in the 90's? You wouldn't lie to us here on AR would you? Have you got a whole pile of guys here buffaloed? That would be a shocking revelation if it were to become public knowledge!

In 77 years you can do a lot, especially if you get the breaks..Back then or now one couldn't make a living booking hunts without a pretty darn good job, fortunatly two of my job assignments allowed me to be in Africa and make a lot of contacts and later led me to get into the booking business. I was invited to to hunt while there and did so, and that included Africa and several other countries and I made a lot of connections, and started booking and I could do my bookings in the evenings or on weekends, I began in the 50s and had always booked hunts in Texas and New Mexico on family and friends lands..Its a long and probably interesting story, but it has worked and I have been very fortunate. After my retirement in 1995 or 96, I did some paid hunting and invested some money in expansion, developed new companies to rep for, and it worked out and I went full time, but actually not much changed. During all this time I hunted Africa extensively and got invited to cull hunts back then and it all started with the teaching pf classes regarding screw worm control and later I jumped on an opertunity and had the background to do some LE teaching in RSA, Zimbabwe and I did some work in Tanzania but it was pretty bad there at the time and didn't amount to much.. I have been very fortunate and lucky..I have been approached to write a book and I may or may not, I'm not to interested in that project for now anyway..Mostly today I like to rope with my grandkids. It came from hard work and good breaks.
Quite a tale...

surestrikeWell I for one think we ought to give Ray the benefit of the doubt here. I'm sure he can provide some factual evidence in regards to these claims. After all this is Ray Atkinson we are talking about here.
I was shocked by the above comments and would really like to hear what Ray has to say about them. I have it on the highest authority here on AR that Ray is the genuine article.

Or a one-off Custom Shop build, that would be more expensive.
For only $895?
Even I would have grabbed it for that price.
Caveat emptor: Some Winchester Custom Shop 470 Capsticks had over-sized rifling,
and I had a friend with one of the Big Five 470 Capsticks that was oversized and had boogered lands.
RIP is correct, I have two of those Win M70 Big Five 470 Capsticks. Sam and I slugged the barrels and both are .477 caliber, not .474 as they need to be.
Michael, you stole this one, no doubt about it! One of the issues that you might run into is this, retaining in the magazine. If in fact Winchester Custom Shop built the rifle, then it will NOT retain rounds down as you work the bolt back and to. If someone that knew what they were doing built the gun, then it will. However, that is not a big issue to solve, and there are a few really good folks that can fix that in short order should it be a problem. Brian at SSK Industries finally sorted both of mine out. While the barrels are over sized, they will feed and function now, which they would not when I got them, and the Winchester Custom shop could not sort it out.
One of the issues I always had with .474 caliber was the POOR ASS choice of bullets available for that caliber. Not so anymore, both North Fork and Cutting Edge have a FULL line of proper bullets for .474. At my urging, for my two 475 B&Ms North Fork has Solids and Cup Points in 375 grs and 425 grs, and a very good 425 gr Premium Soft. Cutting Edge has 350/320 BBW#13s for my Super Shorts, and 450/420 BBW#13s for my 475 B&M, and a 500/460 BBW#13 Combination as well. All of these are EXTREMELY SUPERB bullets, with them you can do anything in the world, and beyond if needed! There would be little need to look elsewhere for real and proper bullets. Many of the rest of the 470 bullets are way UNDER SIZED on top of that, the only one I know that really comes in .474 is the Swift A Frame. I have Woodleighs and Barnes that measure from .472 to .4725, they won't even engrave at all in my .477 caliber guns. The Swift does get some engraving on those.
Let us know what you find out about the rifle when you get it in hand!

Todd WilliamsI was thinking about this thread just the other day. Has anyone heard from Ray Ray since being called out on this discussion? Just wondering if he is around or out shooting buffalo!

Cross LRay severely injured his right hand in a roping accident.he is undergoing surgery. that said, he can type-albit slowly and poorly with just his left so he isn't doing much.. I have no idea what his response might or might not be.

Damn! Ray and I dont like each other at all and that may be an understatement but if he was telling the truth and was actually injured I wish him a full and speedy recovery
His injury will improve in proportion to how far this thread falls down the page until sufficiently forgotten he will return back in the saddle on other subjects.same routine 10 years.
The funniest thing is, despite it,he has some good opinions on things. Lord knows why he felt the need to bullshit about his Af experience early on. I think quite a few folks made that mistake when the internet started. None of it seemed really real, suddenly you could be pen friends with people all around the world and claim anything. No one realised as it expanded you might run into real people who could call you out on fibs. Saddest are are those who actually beleive the bullshitartists- especially all the touching posts after their hero has departed with yet another hat full of shit. same routine there for the last 10 years too

ross10I have a 470 Capstick and it is fantastic. We shot several bears this spring with the 470 and it was a hoot. I shot the cutting edge brass hollow points and they are a very accurate bullet in my Capstick. Next project is to neck a 460 wea to .500 for the 500 S&W pistol bullets just for grinns

ross10 http://youtu.be/RMyyyoKkmOEI was going to make the suggestion to position your bait barrel to make the bears to present a better shot but with a .470 that's not a problem!!

GeorgeSRoss,
how much resistance did the black bears provide against the .470 bullets used?

ross10The bears we shot with the Capstick were DOA
The last bear my buddy shot was with a cutting edge brass hollow point that I drilled 1/4" deeper and it had 4 exit holes. In about 3 weeks the fall season starts and we plan to use a 50 Weatherby and a 500 A-Square. I have 3 kids that are going to shoot there first bear. It should be fun. I will post video. Ross
