Does anyone have any info about performance of the Gibbs Summit 45/70 bolt-action and scoping capability? Thanks

I don't have one per se, but the action is a Lee-Enfield and will probably require a side mount for your scope. Frank DeHass's book "Bolt Action Rifles" could probably better explain what's involved action wise.

There are top mounts and mounts that screw to the side but not side mount such as the scope being off set to the side. I'm kind of curious as the the quality of the Gibbs as well. Have heard alot of negitive reports on their rifles in the past.

After seeing them advertised for years, I picked up a Summit carbine a few weeks ago. Here's what I found:

1. The donor Enfield action must have been very rough. The bolt knob is mishapen as they tried to grind away most of the pitting. The rest of the bolt body is very pitted.

2. The rifle is a mix of 3 finishes. Blued barrel, nasty black crinkle paint receiver, and yellowish chrome plated bolt.

3. They removed the original receiver mounted peep sight. I believe this was done to ease scope mounting using their brand of mount. The replacement sight they use is a standard Williams sight but it's big and ugly. For $30 I replaced the peep with original milled parts from Gun Parts Corp.

4. After working the bolt a few times, the extractor spring popped out. Reinstalled and it happened again. Closer examination showed the spring was a POS that had also seen work with a grinder. A $5 replacement from Gun Parts cured that problem.

5. The rubber buttpad is installed off center.

I believe that, in the end, it will be a fine rifle. Unfortunately, it appears the Summit carbine (at least my example) was rushed to market. I do not believe the rifle is a good value for the dollar. My suggestion would be to wait and pick one up at a discount on the used market (they're sure to appear quite quickly) and put the extra money into fixing it into a better rifle.

Gentlemen,

I recently handled a Gibbs summit carbine at a local gun show. The fit and finish was quite poor in my opinion. The receiver was quite rough, wood was only so-so. The bore did look good, though. If it was me, I wouldn't by one right now, either. I would definitely find a used one in a year or so and pick it up cheap.

One short but important Q. Does it feed from the Mag ???? I have a No1Mk3 SMLE in 45-70 that was made a few years back for me but the ...uhhhmmm,ahem "smith" that built it could never get the mag right. So I have had a non-repeating bolt for about 5 years now and would like to know if the magazine I just ordered will be a p.o.s. Thanks to all 45nut
