ScottSDecisions, Decisions. . . Help me Decide
I feel the need for a new .458 bore. I also what something a little different. So after I rid myself of the 50 Beowulf, what should I get?
Currently I am giving serious consideration to:
1.) Weatherby MkV in 460 Weatherby magnum
2.) Savage 116 in 458 Win mag
Considering these two because they are made in the good ol' USA and owned by Americans. I currently have enough "Euro trash"

, and like I said earlier want something a little different.
Thanks,
Scott

The recoil of MkV.460Wby is very severe...
What about a CZ .458 Lott? ...Nice Rifle....Nice price
HI,
ScottS,I would say look at the 458 lott you can get it in a CZ now. It sounds like it would be a hard hitter. Kev

I second Kev's idea but then I am a bit of a cz fiend

It all comes down to covering margins for error.
Some might suggest a whole bottle of lithocarb, a noose and a high chair and either calibre in the mouth.
This should cover most eventualities.
Karl.

500grainsMr. Sweet, you need to swear off those low budget clunkers like savage and wby and get yourself a quality rifle. I suggest a Searcy PH model in 470 or 500. They have a pretty quick turnaround right now, and it only takes a 50% deposit for them to get started.

ScottSDan,
Actually those rifles are low budget clunkers in their world, aren't they. Did handle my first Merkel 140.2 the other day. It was a 470 NE and it did balance well. The sight alignment was good too. Unfortunately the LOP was about 1.5" to 2" short.

I even had permission to buy!
This rifle would be a beater, not a nice gun. This is the reason I was thinking of the Savage since it is entirely stainless steel so it should handle wet conditions well. The Weatherby is considered, well just because I have owned one in the past, and beating one up won't bother me in the least!

Thanks for the commments so far.
Scott
PS - I love you too Karl.

ScottSPedroSab,
Is your 460 Weatherby a MkV? I once owned a Weatherby MkV in 460 Weatherby mag and it was not a comfy shooter! I know how to fix this condition though.

I will not comment your current inventory

Why not a nice 450 Rigby rimless on a mauser action or a Dakota 76?
A option worth thinking of is a CZ 550 "customized" in 450 Rigby rimless

500grainsIf you want a cheap one, I think it would be best to get a cz550 or win m70 in .458. Later you can convert them to .458 lott very easily. If you are going to use the gun in the rain, then put some oil in the bore.

Scotts:
In the past, I had a MkV .460Wby. Now I have a Heym Express Bolt .460 and the recoil is about 60% less than the weatherby rifle.

That is wise considering you have no clue what is in the inventory.

500grains, I have considered those. I really don't want another CZ550. The M70, in reality, is the preferred rifle. The Savage intrigues me though, the Weatherby is just well a Weatherby.

IdahoCTDOk how about buy a M70 SS magnum and put a barrel of your choosing on it. Something like a 45-404 or 458 RUM would be cool. Light loads would be about Lott velocities and heavy loads would tap the .460 on the shoulder. You might just save enough over the the MKV to afford the dies

. Just my .02 as I'm going to build one in the not too distant future (458RUM) to see if I can take the punishment.

Pecos41Scott/Todd E et al - Based on your last posts and wild claims, I thought you ALREADY HAD at least two of every big bore rifle in the world?

Or as you recently assured all of us, "I've been there and done that!"
.
Or do you post this sort of phony post because no one will talk to you otherwise? Curious minds want to know.
Maybe you should ask "~judy?"

MauserAxel and 500grains are buddies now? Now that is interesting to see!

ScottSKarl,
Lighten up! Mauser is only jerking your chain man, don't give him the satisfaction.

SabotThe most fun .458 bore I can think of for the States is a Savage 300 WSM Hunter with a new 450 Marlin bbl on it. You get an extra 0.250 inch of COL and move up from 40,000 to 52,000 CUP. Even at 40K, it will make 4000 FPE in a 22 inch bbl. Really, this is screw on the bbl and shoot deal and since there is room for spitzers, its a 300 yard big game rifle.
There really is nothing this easy to build that will shoot factory ammo and still top a 375 H&H in close and still deliver 1800 FPE at 300 yards with a decent trajectory.
