Hi GBE;
Not sure what you can get into Aus from online US retailers; I got mine from Midway USA, right now they're listed as 'unavailable.' They do have some 400gr speer .458s in stock.
I hunt with 500s, but the 405s sure do turn a gallon jug of water inside out! For half the price...

If you're hunting PG rather than DG do you need the .3+ SD?

If you're using monometals or Hydro's does the 1905 benchmark DG SD threshold of .3+ really matter?

A big bore bullet with an SD of .27 is perfectly adequate for our largest deer - and surely the 180g from a .30'06, SD .271 IIRC, has accounted for just a few elk?

Thanks mate
Been seeing "unavailable" a lot the past 6 months - I'm thinking rem have stopped selling them as a component which is a damn shame.

I'm currently using the 400g PP as a deer load but a cheap target pill would be handy.

SD is not a good predictor of penetration, SD doesn't take into account many other factors that affect penetration. The mono metal expanding bullets out penetrate many heavier lead core bullets.

What kind of accuracy are you guys getting out of your Lotts with lighter weight pills? I've long considered putting together a Lott with the prospect of using it for a one gun Safari.

I've seen some really stellar performance from CEB's 258gr flat base raptor out of a 458 B&M. They were shots on leopard bait animals that I'd definitely consider long shots, 200-300. Disclaimer: I wasn't the one on the hunt, I just received the detailed hunt report and pictures from the gentleman who was. I've shot that 458 B&M, it is an easy sub-moa gun.

Will the Lott shoot the same kind of accuracy without too much fuss? I just don't have much experience with straight walled cartridges to know. I've really struggled in deciding between building a 458 Lott, or just keep shooting my 416 Rem. The lure of a 458 and cheap practice bullets keeps me motivated to consider it. Sorry for going off topic a bit.
