LongShotRXIron Sights
How many of you make use of the iron sights on your DG rifles? So far the quotes on installing NEGC Masterpiece sights on my Lott project are running over $350.00. I have a Leupold 2x waiting for the rifle to be completed and I am having trouble blowing the extra 350 on something I may never use. Seems that as this project grows, so does the ammount of attention my wife is paying to the cost. Thanks for your thoughts.

tiggertateFor me that depends. My 505 and one-day 550 will have no provision for scopes. On the 505 it just looks wrong as that gun is built around tradition. On the 550 it a matter of my safety. I don't trust myself to be cognizant of my shooting position at all times and don't want to leave a once in a lifetime hunt for medical treatment. On the other hand, neither of my 416s will ever have iron sights simply because of the way I hunt with them.

retreeverLongShot,
I am as we speak having the NECG express sights and front beads install in my Ruger 458Lott the new production rifle...I have installed a fiber optic red front bead and a white one for extra..Also a 1.5/5X leupold Varix3..with Warne QD mounts...This rifle is gjoingt to Zim in August for buf...but I want to shoot one up close and personal and not at 100yds...I have been practing out to 70yds on sticks but I will get more practice in when the cold leaves Pennsylvania and some warmer weather is here...
I will be shooting two dagga boys and I will try for one open and one with the scope...

If it is really a DG rifle, as opposed to just a large calibe rifle, than iron sights are mandatory. If you actually need to go into the thick and follow up an animal at close range the scope is a liability. Don't equate screwing around at the range with an actual close encounter.
There is also the idea of a broken scope when you are out in the bush and unless you carry a spare in your back pocket you could be wondering what was worth more than the sights?
