.416 Dakota Recoil
Can anyine please tell me how's the recoil on a .416 Dakota in comparison to a .416 Rigby??
I am planning on building me one and must choose between the dakota and a local wildcat .458, the .458 Sabi wich is a 500 Jeffrey case necked down to .458 with a 40 degree shoulder and it kicks the living daylight out of you!! The sabi proppels a 500gr bullet at 2550fps and the dakota a 400gr bullet at 2550fps.

Lourens,

According to this recoil chart, the .416 Dakota kicks a bit more than the .416 Rigby.

A basic formula for recoil calculation is (bullet weight + powder charge weight) X weight of rifle / weight of rifle X 8

What uints are you using? Might make a big diffrence.

In the basic formula, it's grains for powder charge and bullet weight, and pounds for rifle weight.

BTW, that is not my formula; it's one I've seen in gun rags and on the 'net.

Here's a calculator that is used:

Both formulae work out to almost exactly the same value, at least for my .470 Capstick.

It is basically equating the bullet and powder velocity and weight to the gun weight and hence its velocity. There is probably some jet effect of the gas leaving the barrel, as I do not calculate it to the same numbers as they do.

e.g.,

400 gr. bullet, 2400 ft/s, 70 gr. of powder, 7.5 lb. rifle:

(400/7000)2400 + (70/7000)2400 = 7.5V

V= 21.5 ft/s (I think recoil calculator gives 23 ft/s).

Recoil energy = (0.5/32.17)(7.5)(21.5)^2 = 54 ft-lb (recoil calculator gives 66 ft-lb)
