John Galt.458 Lott and RL 15
Hello Everyone,
While I did attempt to search the forum, I didn't come up with all the much recent data on reloading the .458 Lott. I am looking to load up some Barnes TSX in 450 grain and 500 grain using RL 15 and I was wondering if anyone here and any good recipes to start. I may also give the 250 grain CEB's a try as well. If you have a powder that works better for you in the .458 Lott than RL 15, I'm all ears! Thanks in advance for your guidance!

pagosawingnutI think what I finally settled on was the H335. I will have to check my load notes to be sure but best I remember, that was it. Very accurate out of my Ruger and gave me 2254 with the softs and 2260 with the solids. If that information on the powder isn't correct, I will PM you and let you know.

Patrick StollThe current Barnes manual has several Lott loads for both 450 and 500 grain bullets.
Last fall, in preparation for a Mozambique trip with 500 grain A-frames, I called the Swift ballistician and received excellent service. With the 500 grain A-frame, Reloader 15 was the winner for velocity, case capacity and low pressure,83 grains. I recovered several from buffalo, expansion was perfect, penetration great and all went 490+ grains.

michael458I have burned many a pound of RL 15 in 458 Win and 458 Lott and did exactly the same as Patrick, or nearly. Using 500 Swifts and 500 Barnes Banded with 82/RL 15 gave me a dead steady 2270-2285 in 24 inches of 458 Lott. I also recovered several Swifts from buffalo, and just as Patrick says, excellent performance.
But that was back in the days...........
Today I would be looking at a few other powders in these cartridges. I would look very hard at IMR 8208, followed by TAC. Both gave some excellent results a bit ago when I did some new data for 458 WIn and 458 Lott.

While not RL15, H4895 has proven a solid performer for me in two different Lotts and one Ackley. I've gone as high as 85grains under a 500 grain bullet but settled on 82grains for a go-to load. Velocities run right around 2250fps and are very consistent.
