585 rifle weight survey
I'm trimming mine down from the 18.5lb synthetic monstrosity it is to a real safari piece.
Interested in the rifle weights out there amongst my fellow psycopaths.
Might as well throw in the smokeless fifties as well.(not BMg's [Smile] )

Mine is 13.25 pounds. That's about my max carry weight for a 10 mile stalk. I could not carry that weight for 20 miles.

Nitroman
13.25 pounds with 1x Burris and 12.25 w/o. This is with sling and 4 cartridges as you would hunt. If I remove the reducer in the butt it removes another pound. I can do this if I keep the velocity below 2300fps or so. Otherwise I want the reducer. This is for my .500 A-Sq.

My 585 NYATI now weighs 14 lbs with three mercury reducers and a swarovski scope. That's also max weight for a 10 mile hike. I need a gun bearer bad!-Rob

My goal for my 500 Jeffrey is 11#'s with iron sights and empty. I haven't stocked it yet, so not sure what it'll finish as. The metalwork is 8#'s+ currently.

If I ever build one it will weigh 87.5 kilos and come with a set of 22.7 kilo wheels with 20 Lbs of Mercury in the butt and 5 in the forearm..Add 9.5"'s of recoil pad on that. I heard it kicks harder than a 505 Gibbs, scares me and I ain't ascared of noth'en....

Jeffe,
Is that the classic weight for the 577 NE?
What were the weights for the 500 and 600 doubles? (I haven't got my John taylor books at the moment)

Karl, classic weigh for 500 NE double is around 11 - 12 pounds for a 600 NE 13.5 - 14.5 pounds. Most 577 NE tip the scales around 13 pounds.

Karl- I have a Ruger #1 in 577 3" NE. Right now it weighs 9 3/4 lbs! IT does have a muzzle break, which iI highly recomend, any way it is going back to the gunsmith to have another mercury reducer put in the stock, that should bring it up another 1lb. I dont think it is that bad to shoot,750's around 2100 fps are not all that bad! Get above 2200,and it is a whole differnt ball game!

Thanks gents.I think 13 lbs without scope looks like it will do then.
Will still stay above nitro power. Maybe 2300fps with 750gn. No point trying to get too nostalgic-only so much pedigree can be tagged to a three year old wildcat [Smile]

Hey Karl !!

It's good to have you back !
I need to ask you again about the .530/460 Mcdonald case,,and what ballistics it is capable of ??
How about your .585 Gehringer,,,2620 fps@750 gr. Could you compare recoil with the same bullet going at 2300 fps ? [Big Grin] [Eek!] [Confused]

Per,
I doubt geoff mcdonald has pushed his 530 past what he makes his bullets for, he is a hunter first and foremost.Don't know bullet weight either-I know he swages the 577 bullets down for the 55 Boyes collectors. If 7800ftlbs is the 460's record safe expert handloading power ,my guess is 9000ftlbs with this cartridge.
I haven't tested maximums for my rifle yet.

Do you own any bigbores?

Karl.

Karl !!

I have a .416 Weatherby Magnum,,and soon i'll have a .577 Tyrannosaurus A-Square !! [Eek!] [Eek!] [Big Grin]

Per,
By your posts you seem to be more interested in KE values than hunting.
Nothing wrong with that. In fact if its your area of interest why not go all the way to a 577/50bmg or 700 custom etc.

Karl.

Yess Karl !!

I'm more interested in Energy figures !
Well you see,,the .577 T-rex i'm about to receive is much cheaper than a new .700 BMG IMPROVED.
One must remember that a 750 gr. bullet at 2600 fps is powerful indeed !!
i think with horneber brass and Vithauri high energy powders one can get to 2700 fps !!!! [Eek!]

By the way, could you say anything about the A-square hannibal in this chambering ? [Confused]

Karl
Per,
Sorry I thought I answered your post.I might have tacked it onto the end of another thread somewhere.

Anyway , the only hannibal rifle I know of is the one mentioned in Saeed's reloading section.
