small primers in large calibers
Some one once special made a pistol cases that I think it was 445 supper mag. it may have been the .454 And it had small primers not large so it could take more pressure. Do any of you remember that, and would it work on bigger cases? I think it would work more brass on the bottom and smaller place for the primer just sounds like the way to go.

308 benchrest cases have a small rifle primer. I have a 22 Cheetah II that I make cases for using these 308 benchrest cases but I dont know if this allows an increase in pressure. I dont think so. For example could you load to higher pressure with 308 benchrest cases than standard 308 or could I load to higher pressures in my Cheetah than the 22 Milstead made from standard 243 cases? Im sure not an expert but I dont think so.

The 454 Casull has been known to use small rifle primers. The brass I use in the Casull, Starline and Winchester, both use small rifle primers.

thanks do you know why they did put small primers in the 454?

so why would it not work for 44mag or others?

Not sure why they use small rifle primers.

Maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject

could share?

I'm using Starline brass in my SuperMag and it has large primer pockets. I use rifle primers in it.

Buffalo bore had a run of 45-70 cases made that use a small rifle primer, as I recall the headstamp was 45-70 lever action mag.

The 454 casull used small rifle primers to handle the high pressures the 454 runs at. Pistol primers use softer cups then rifle primers, and with the rifle pressures the 454 opperates at, the designer wanted the stronger cups. In large primers, the pistol primer is shorter then the rifle primer, so rifle primers would stand proud when seated in a pistol primer case. In small primers, the pistol and rifle primers are the same height.
