Is this only for the military
Can you get a semi automatic rifle in caliber .50 BMG for hunting? Would it be possible to build a .700 BMG IMP on a .50 BMG Semi Automatic action?
Or is it only for the military???

Thanks!

In Kansas, no. There is no upper limit on caliber or ammunition capacity for hunting rifles.

Barrett makes a ten shot semi for the .50BMG with a detachable mag.

Does any one know if it is legal for hunting in sweden? It has become a new law that "all semi automatic rifles is legal for hunting but not if it looks like a military gun"

You can get one, but you wil need two gun bearers or a set of wheels to get it around in the woods!! [Big Grin]

A Barret is about 5 feet long and weighs 35 pounds without ammo. Last one I saw was over five grand. I'll pass but I would love to shoot one

What an idiotic law. Dead is dead.

What exactly is the point of "improving" a .50 BMG cartridge? It's not exactly lacking...

The Serbu BFG 50 Carbine only weighs 17lbs and costs $2395, thats really not that bad. I still wouldn't want to carry it around all day, but it's not to far fetched.

DanD: I wouldn't want to carry around all day a 17 pound rifle either. but i'd damn sure rather carry a 17 pound 50BMG than shoot it from my shoulder..... [Smile]

roughly calculated:

378 Weatherby @ 9 pounds
300 grain bullet
114 grains of powder
mv = 2965
recoil = 72# @ 23fps

50BMG @ 17 pounds
800 grain bullet
225 grians of powder
mv = 2728
recoil = 196# @ 27fps

i'll have to pass on this one...... [Smile]

If you want to poop off that much money, you can! But I believe you'd need a gun-bearer, and ammo bearer, and someone to carry the tripod! Unless you plan to build a fortified position on the side of a mountain, and shoot things across the canyon!! [Eek!]

That's not an apples to apples comparison. The .50 BMG rifles are equipped with some rather large muzzle brakes, and believe me, I'd rather shoot a .50 BMG bolt action at 23 pounds all day long than a Benelli M1 Super 90 with slugs.

23lbs is over a full third heavier than 17 to carry mate.

Never said I would be the one shooting, just stating it was possible. I think the weight lifting instructor at my gym (6'4" 345lbs.) might have a chance, heheh.

Duh- Seems to me I remember carrying a M60 Machine gun for quite awhile and never complained too much about it's weight! Other guys carried most of the ammo though. so why can't you carry a Barret if you wanted too? Yes, It probably could be converted to a .700-Rob

Rob,

Do you think the receiver could stand the extra stress of the .700 BMG Imp.?
18 July 2003, 15:40
Robgunbuilder
Urodoji- Yes I believe it would, I have looked at the Barrett .50 and while it doesen't have adequate accuracy for a .50BMG, I don't really doubt it's inherent strength.-Rob

I just wonder about the ability of the welds in the receiver to handle the impact from the collar around the barrel extension(it's 3:30, I don't remember what Barrett calls it...), or if the sheet metal receiver would begin to flex and distort under that impact. Either way, I don't think there's much to be gained from improving the .50 BMG case, either by necking up, necking down(the .338 Talbot didn't do well, nor did the Mach V cartridge from State Arms), nor by straightening the case and giving it a sharper shoulder. I'll have to post a pic of my Barrett some time.
