killbillCZ 500 Jeffery...Older vs Newer Model
Hello gentlemen,
i am about to purchase an older model CZ Magnum 500 Jeffery, which i believe was manufactured sometime around the year 2000. There are several differences between the model i am buying and the current production models. i would appreciate any comments regarding preference, design etc. i hope to post a picture of the rifle i intend to purchase, but the main differences i see are the safety position and stock configuration.
I am going with the 500 Jeffery because it takes the same bullet as my 500 nitro.
just posted a link to pictures on photobucket. The model i am buying is the one with the thicker, scalloped stock...BRNO prominent on top of breech. ANY thoughts welcome!
many thanks!
Cool. That looks like an older M98 BRNO action (thumb cut) (pre "CZ" commercial). The butterknife bolt handle is interesting, but I don't know if I'd want it on a DGR.

killbillhey Dave!
thanks for the info. i am a newbie to BIG bore bolt actions. i can buy the older M98 for many hundreds of dollars less than a new CZ. i doubt i will take it to Africa because i prefer my Searcy 500, but i just love the 500 Jeffery (shot a Sako i can't afford) round and wanted a rifle for it. if you have a decided preference in this situation i would love to hear it! thanks again!

fla3006Looks like a custom built on a VZ24, 98/22 or 98/29 military action. Interesting rifle.

If it feeds...looks like a good buy...I get a different bolt handle...ore than that...good deal..

killbillthanks Ed, i appreciate the comments. i've read about feed issues with the cartridge and if there is one with the rifle hopefully it wont be a hard fix, cuz i've bought it! looking forward to giving it a thorough testing.

gunslinger55My 2 cents I bought a first gen .505 CZ from custom shop. The ones with the rear spacer on express sights due to the excessively large barrel band and puny front sight. Sent it back and they totally reworked the feeding, bedding, new barrel band sight with no spacer. CZ custom shop will stand behind their product for sure and even warranties broken stock no questions. I would not hesitate to buy a CZ custom rifle. Still needs love from AHR though and is going there soon. And this one had the perfect 22" tube I think the new ones are 24"

chuck375My 500 Jeffery needed some TLC from Harlan at the CZ Custom Shop, Wayne at AHR and finally Kevin Weaver to make me a new magazine follower (the final fix to feeding and extracting). The rifle is simply wonderful now. Although it took a bit, for about $2500 all in minus scope it's a sweet rifle.

Chuck

AtkinsonI'll buy a new one and trade you even for that one, today or anyday in the future that your not happy with that old worn out job! and I ain't kidding!!

as long as you don't cut that bolt handle off, why would one want to do that..I have used those bolt handles for years and never had a single problem, that's just another conceived none existant problem IMO..

gunslinger55Good to hear you got it sorted out. My main issue was the tiny front sight. Took a bit of work from Harlan to get that sorted out. The rest was relish and Wayne would be just piling on the goodness...Apparently the .505 feed better out of the box than the .500's?

killbillMany thanks to all you gentlemen who have commented! you certainly make me feel better about my purchase, because as i have said before, i am a newbie to big bore bolt actions.
i have a set of dies coming and am anxious to start loading for the Jeffery. i am sure it will take a lot of shooting to become familiar, maybe even comfortable(???)with the big cartridge. I am hopeful to find a good cast bullet load for "plinking" and Black Bear, so any suggestions are most welcome!
again gentlemen, thank you for taking your time to comment.

killbilli found a knowledgeable collector of Czech rifles who informed me that the action is a vz24, made in 1928(H2 suffix) for the Czech military. the E(lion crest)28 above the serial number signifies the rifle was put in military service in 1928. i am glad and appreciative the riflemaker did a good job of preserving the factory markings. many thanks to everyone that replied, especially Ray Atkinson for his many communications!

Rule 303I second what Ray said.
The bolthandel is great. I have a Steyr Prohunter with one and wish more rifles came with them. I have found them to be far more secure in your hand/fingers than a round nob at the end of the handle.

AtkinsonYes sir, and the last thing I want on a 500 or 50 is a scope, a receiver or shallow V work real well on the game those calibers are made for. Everyone I shot was accurate with irons to 150 or so yards, which is also about my limit on DG....

Ahhh.. Ok....
CZ products are currently imported exclusively by CZ-USA, a subsidiary of the parent company, Česká zbrojovka a.s. Uherský Brod (ČZUB) of the Czech Republic. CZ firearms have been available through normal channels in the US since 1991, through such importers/distributors as Bauska, Action Arms, Magnum Research. In 1997 ČZUB recognized the need to control its own destiny in a market as big as the US. Initially based in Oakhurst, California, the CZ-USA headquarters and warehouse facility was moved to Kansas City in January 1998.
CZ-USA also owns Dan Wesson Firearms based in Norwich, New York, maker of a variety of pistols, including semi-automatics and revolvers since 1968. Many CZ products sold by CZ-USA are imports from the Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod factory, but there are several uniquely American CZ-USA products, notably the line of Safari Classics rifles and the 550 Tactical Rifles. All of these products are built by CZ-USA's custom shop in Warsaw, Missouri.
