WinkBore guide
O wise men of the AR forum, who makes or sells a bore guide which will fit the CZ550 Magnum for the .458 calibers? I can only find up to .416 caliber.

GeorgeSTry adapting a cigar tube or piece of PVC, if you cannot find a ready-made guide.

<allen day>Most commercial bore guides aren't worth anything, especially if you have a controlled-feed rifle with a fixed ejector. The vast majority of these bore guides are really designed for use with push-feed actions, such as the Remington 700, and when you try to remove one of these units from a CRF action, the edge of the tapered flange at the front of the guide wants to hang up on the ejector.
The solution is to obtain a straight bore guide from Sinclair, International that has no flang up front, and will not hang up on the ejector. I've used one of these for years on CFR Model 70 and Mauser 98 rifle with perfect satisfaction, no damage, and no hassles.

csutton7I believe Ray Atkinson had the best solution by making one from a spent case--I don't remember the exact details, but hopefully he'll post on it--if you do a search it may come up--chris

<allen day>The "spent-case" bore guide simply isn't a good idea. It might be cheap, but it isn't very good at so much of what a bore guide is supposed to do for you.
It doesn't protect the inner-workings of your action from coming into comtact with your cleaning rod (not good for either unit), and it doesn't keep solvents and gunk out of the action. Its short length also does nothing to correctly align the rod before it ever gets into the barrel, either.

JohnTAllen,
I use the Bore Tech guides but they don't make one past .416 cal. I have resorted to the spent case guide & it does protect the action etc on my .404J. What you have to do is cut the case say a third from the base & epoxy it in an aluminium tube of the correct length & diameter which you can get for a few bucks in the hardware store.
Be sure to wrap masking tape to the case to build it up so it will center in the aluminium tube before epoxying. Where I didn't do this the case was off center.
Down side is that being brass is not impervious to the chemicals we use to get copper out - but it will do where nothing else is available.
I have just got some bore guides from Mike Lucas for my .22 & .17. They are custom made but not that expensive either. I have emailed him to ask if he makes them in the big bores. Hell of a nice guy to deal with.

csutton7John T--yea that's what Ray does I believe---
Allen--did you think I meant just use the case without an extension added on???(I can see where one could think that) I was alluding to what John T just said, but didn't recall the exact particulars and didn't want to misrepresent--I should've been a little clearer--do you still think that this method won't work???----chris

fireball168Is there a viable market for these things, Delrin is pretty easy to machine....and probably a lot cheaper if buying in quantity.
Sinclair made a couple of custom guides for me 3 or 4 years ago...only required minor reworking - but I supplied all the dimensions too.
If they aren't doing it anymore, I might have to jump on this deal.

pertinaxI've got the same problem, and I'd be a customer for a machined bore guide.

WinkGentlemen,
I think I'll just cut a piece of PVC pipe. At least it will keep dirt and bore cleaners out of the magazine box. It won't however really center the cleaning rod at contact with freebore and rifling unless I figure out an easy way to place a diameter guide within the plastic pipe.

fredj338Midway sells smooth one piece guides. If they don't have one in .458, you could get a .416 & open it up w/ a drill bit. I did this for my .338x74K, took a guide for the .30-06, Ruger #1, drilled it our for .338 & had ro do a wee bit of sanding around the outside. Works great!

fireball168That's basically what I did to make the guide for my 376 Steyr, bought a Weatherby .378 guide from Midway, reduced the O.D. and the cartridge portion O.D., recut for a different O-ring...and was done.
