Has anyone had experience in throat reaming a #1 to enable using heavier or longer bullets than the 300gr. ?

My No1 in 45/70 was an older one.

One of my buddies got a newer one and my loads would not chamber in his rifle.

We just seated the bullets deep enough to chamber, and reduced the powdercharge the required amount. His rifle shot very good so we did not want to take a chance messing anything up by deepening the chamber.

I had one of the very first ones (blued) and had to cut the throat longer. It's not at all unusual with that model and caliber.

Rented a reamer and my brother who is a retired tool & die maker took two minutes to take out enough for me to chamber all the dummy loads I had made up. Very simple process. Not to load up and shoot.

I had a 45/70 stainless. I loaded everything up to the 400 grain Speer flat points. However, I couldn't use either cannelure. I had to seat it below the shortest one, which really cut the case capacity. Crimping isn't an issue at least, with the #1.

I have since rebarreled it to 45/120, so bye bye to case capacity issues.

Really, it's not necessary to rebarrel unless one really wants to. I've owned two: the older (first) had a longer throat and the second had a slightly shorter throat. I had it long-throated by an excellent smith to an additional .30". That was about ten years ago. It's equal to a .458WM. My favorite load now is the 350 TSX at about 2470 fps, and that's not max.
