416 Rigby in Ruger #1 questions?

eskimo36416 Rigby in Ruger #1 questions?
I have a chance to buy a Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby from a co worker for less than $450. I have looked a little and seen sources for bullets and reloading dies but haven't seen any brass for sale in a quick search. How available and pricey is brass for this gun?
Also what are your thoughts on this gun/cartridge combo?

eskimo36I knew the price was good. Thanks for the affirmation. Any of you shoot one with less than full power loads? Lead bullets?

BuliwyfNo lead bullets for me. But, work on loads using 300 gr Barnes and 340 gr Woodleigh. Very good results with accuracy and velocity thus far. Shoot sub MOA all day long with the 340's.

Eric_PNorma brass is expensive, but it will last you a long time. Hornady brass is now available which is quite a bit less.
I have shot a couple of cast bullets in my Ruger RSM (bolt action) with excellent results. I used the RCBS 350 grain and a 400 grain lbt both with Accurate 5744.
Good luck the Rigby is a great caliber.

RIPI have two of them.
Walnut and blue.
One knocks over deer at 342 yards and water buffalo at 50 yards with 350-grain Barnes X-bullets at 2700 fps.
The other got rebarreled to 500A2 and got a B&C synthetic stock,
though the original walnut has survived over 200 rounds of 500A2.
They are amazingly strong and accurate, with the fat barrel, and properly laid out stocks.
I lusted after a used, stainless and brown laminate, .416 Rigby Ruger No.1 once, but it was going out of the shop with someone else just as I spied it.
Good price.
I have Norma, Hornady, and Federal brass.
It's all good.
If I were starting over, it would all be Hornady.

Bill/OregonI used about 50 grains of XMP5744 and the RCBS 350-grain gas checked cast bullet (at about 365 grains all up) to get inch groups at 100 yards and about 2,000 fps. A very pleasant and deadly load for the No. 1 in .416. Lyman dies are dirt cheap, and good, too. These days, I use Hornady brass in the CZ.

BuliwyfWell, looks like you have our full support to move forward

FWIW I disconnect the ejector on mine and use extractor only. Makes the action smoother and keeps the empty case from hitting the safety and falling back in chamber (if you file the safety down the empty brass will then hit the stock comb). The instructions to disconnect the ejector are in the Ruger Manual.

eskimo36Thank you all for your input. I should have it my hands shortly. The next charging armadillo in the yard will be in big trouble....

IanDNice caliber. I have one in a CZ 550. You can get Hornady brass much cheaper than Norma.

eskimo36It worked out and last night i picked up the 416 Rigby Ruger #1. I also got a box of Hornady Factory loads with it and all the factory box, rings, etc. It has been shot 5 times. The wood is very nice in the butt stock. As soon as I get some time off and get to go home for awhile, the reloading process will begin.
What about a scope??? I was thinking a Leupold Ultralight 2.5x....

Rick BehlingI have the very same rifle, trust me you will like it. Great rifle, great caliber. 400 grain bullets at 2,450 fps is more than enough for anything you might come up against.
