Old 404J Ammo from Chicago
For you Mid-Westerners, do you remember Bell's Gun and Sport Shop in Franklin Park, IL? I have three boxes of RWS 404J ammo from there wearing a price tag of $27.30 per box.

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to when Bell's had this ammo on the shelf?

I don't Know about Bell's store, but I vaguely recall RWS was loading that in the 1970's and it is the hotter variety of 404 Jeffery factory load, doing about 2350 fps with 400-grainers in a 24" barrel.

Bell's has been in business for as long as I can remember and still is as far as I know. I think you would have to go more by the price to date the ammo.

Forrest,

Bells are still around and I used to pass them almost every day when my wife worked at the University of Chicago. Haven't been inside but if you want me to check this for you, just let me know. They're just about thirty minutes from my place. And, of course, I'll owe you for the excuse of going to a gun shop. Big Grin
