Pump or lever for fast follow up shots?
Hi, just an idea bounceing around my head after reading Ed's reports on the 12gaFH.
The Norinco 1887 lever and 1897 pump shotguns were both proofed up to 43,000 psi by White Labs.
So with a heavy loaded 12 bore(rifled barrels installed) which one would you guys prefer if you were to take one of these into the brush to finish off something big and ugly?

And as long as I'm on this subject. I wonder how a 50 BMG x 2.5" (or 12x50)would do in the 1887 lever gun? I think I'll call it the 510 Collarbone Express.

A double in at least 470 Nitro Express.

I did read on here, however long ago, that some PHs prefer a shotgun with buckshot or slug for following up a Lion in the brush. This was the basis for posting this kind of question here.

So if the work on the 12 ga FH can help to develope a more powerful 12 bore slug gun...
Would it work better in the above situation, that was originally posted by other forum members that have actually been there(not me),?
and if it would provide a more effective tool, which action type, lever or pump, would work better in that kind of situation?
You could also stretch that to hunting Hogs in Texas.

If you could neck down one of the CBC 12 ga brass cases or a 50 BMG case, it would have a larger capacity than a 470NE case.
The 470 holds 146 gns H2O, a 2.5" 12 ga holds 280. Maybe shorten the case to 2" and neck down it should hold more than 210 gns.
So with a 24" bbl you could get a 500gn .475 bullet going 2150 with a pressure around 33ksi.
A 20 " bbl might take around 37k to reach 2150fps.

Never on lion...

Some PH's like a shotgun on leopard. I am not one of them. A lion can reach 50mph (80kph) in 2.5 seconds if you don't have a double there is no chance of a second shot.

If it will handle it, a pump shotgun with the 12GaFH short at 25000 KPSI is a hellacious round with 1000 gr bullets. In a 20 inch barrel you could follow-up a wounded T-Rex in the thick stuff and not feel under gunned. Clean his clock too.-Rob
