PCAre Lothar .404 Barrels .423"??
I am wondering if the Lothar Barrel I am ordering will be .423" the same as the woodleigh catalouge lists there .404" bullets as being.
COTW & Gregor Woods book which I am currently reading mention the .404 as being .421" and my smith thought so as well, whats the deal here ??

AtkinsonLW barrels are .418 (European) or .423 (USA) and both are 1x14 twist....Always get the .423 barrel....They have never made a .421 barrel.....

This is something that have stirred people on this forum. Order a barrel that is within the C.I.P standards. The easiest way is to follow the proof house regulations. Some that make barrels or reamers have their own ideas about dimentions and that is when the trouble start to arrive. Play within the rules.....

PCRay & others I have settled on Contour #1450 I liked the looks of it. The order would have been placed by now so thats it on Barrel choice. I took your advice on Having LW do the contouring.

RustyThe two I purchased were both .423 in their heavy magnum sporter contour

PCThanks Rusty,
so you ordered the ehavy magnumsporter contour as well ??
I think that contour has nice clean lines and will work well with the .404 Jeffery.
How did you build your rifles what style etc. ??

RustyPC,
You'll have to ask John Ricks, he's put'n the rifles together. It should lean toward the classic Mauser look.
To tell ya the truth I'm so excited about just having John doing the work I really don't care what it looks like! I know it will be a finely tuned rifle built by an man who truely loves his craft. That is good enough for me!
Now if I get lucky he might have it ready by the end of April or March.
When the Montana left handed actions get sent out, he will be making another one for my buddy!

John RicksHey Johan, the unofficial standard for 404 Jeffery bullets here in the US is .423. My thinking is all 404 Jeffery rifles built today should carry .423 barrels. Anyone in the US ever tried to obtain .418" bullets?? I think they are hard to find.
Rusty's rifles are using the Super Magnum Sporter contour, no. 1450. Makes up a very nice looking rifle with the 1.230" breech diameter. Muzzle diameter is 0.700". I have both barrels in the vault. Ordered another one this week for a 404 Dakota that I will be building.

kospc i had a 404 18 years ago ,which iam sure was 423 ,sorry i dont know brand of barrel[ ithink it was lothar] ,i have a photo of it ,but no idea how to post photo .one good thing about the 404 is you can shoot 44 magnum projectiles out of it .427. cheap for oinkers and roos ,and i have used it for the same, so its a practical everyday rifle, i am thinking now i want another one !

PCThe 1450 Contour was the one I evntually ordered.
Kos would it be dangerous to shoot .427 cal projectiles from a .423 barrel ??
I really do not need this rifle Kos but my smith had a gem of an action with most of the work already done for the .404 so I could not help myself even though it really is out of my budget

Rusty I really don't need this rifle. I resemble that statement! Since when did
don't need keep us from buying a rifle!

I'm just romancing the cartridge to go with my 450/400 3 inch. A classic combo!
Be sure to post some pictures PC when it gets done.

PCYes Rusty there will be pics, I will get my smith to take them and e-mail them to me. He will not be doing anymore work on it until after May. My Barrel will be two months coming at any rate.

kospc thats what i thought, about shooting 44 mag projectiles out of a 404 ,i was a bit dubious about it, but my gunsmith said he knew, other shooters and himself doing it ! but it works !maybe they are a very thin jacket to suit low pressures in mod 94 lever actions anyway it works .but if in doubt dont !

PCKos iff possible I reckon the 300 gr XTP hornady's would be great for Aussie ferals at Jeffery velocities !!
