Ruger #1 458 Lott stock split
I just returned from a squirrel shoot in NE Oregon. Had a good time but noticed the stock on my #1 458 Lott SS laminate is starting to split (or rather "delaminate"). The area in question is on the left side from just behind where the stock meets the receiver side and follows the line of the contouring up and around the top of the wrist (bad description I know). The thin splitting is of coarse at the laminate layers. No splitting at the tang. Anyone hear of the with the Lott #1s before?

I have had the rifle about 7 months and haven't shot it a ton...probably have 120-130 rounds through it. I will contact Ruger after the holiday. How do you think Ruger handles stock issues on big rifles?

John,
ruger is pretty stand up... should be send it and and get it fixed... don't be surprised if the lawyers work on your trigger, though

Yep,
And after Ruger sends the gun back with a new stock, epoxy bed the joint where action meets buttstock for peace of mind.

The cheap laminates are not as strong as good walnut, apparently. The laminating epoxy does not really penetrate every pore and grain, so the stock is only as strong as the individual laminate layers, and what are they? Birch? Acrabond walnut laminate would be better. Anybody seen a synthetic Ruger No.1 stock?

Thanks RIP and Jeffe for the responses. I think (hope!) Ruger will fix it without a hassle. Being a #1 virgin (of Ruger No. 1s that is ) I didn't think about having the buttstock bedded. I really like the rifle and it does a fine job on the digger squirrels

I agree...send it back to Ruger, but as Jeffe said, be prepared to have it returned to "the way it was when it left the factory". I had this happen to me, and they even wanted to replace my decelerator pad with that factory piece of you know what. It took the better part of a half hour on the phone to convince them that that was not the cause of my feeding problems on my M-77 RSM. Of course that was after the lady told me that the main problem was that I was using and aftermarket magazine in the gun!!!!

Bell and Carlson makes it in Kevlar and glass in any camo or black you want. I once bought a #1 with a black stock. It worked well but the gun lost its charm with me with no Walnut.
