befusNEF/H&R Handi-Rifle in 500 S&W
A friend informed me today the NEF will chamber the popular single shot Handi-Rifle in the whopper handgun chambering .500 S&W. This cartridge gets nearly 2000 fps out of a pistol; anyone got an idea what sort of ballistics one might get out of the 22-inch barrel of the Handi-Rifle? Just sounds interesting to me.

bowhuntrrlIf I recall correctly, a .500 S&W gives about 1750 fps. I think out of the rifle it could possibly give 2000 with the right powder. I have some Hornady .454 Casull loads that use a 240 gr XTP at 2000 fps from a handgun. I have a Puma 92 carbine in the same caliber and it gets better than 2300 fps with the same load. The extra barrel length of the NEF may yield the same kind of velocity increase.

vapodogSmith and wesson claims 2600 ft-lb of energy out of a 10 1/2" barrel.....this means the 350 grain bullet is about 1,800'/sec.
In another comparison it's about three times the energy of a .44 magnum.
if it can reach 2,200'/sec in a 20" rifle barrel the energy would be close to a .338 Win Mag.......about 3,800 ft-lb
I hope NEF puts a really good recoil pad on those things.

jeffeossoI'd have one, in the handirifle that is....
I like the one i have in 45/70, loaded up pretty good with 405s
http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/index.php?cat=4&subcat=6#17looking at corbin and quickload... yes, you CAN get the ME in the 3000+.. AT THE MUZZLE... but the bullets have a junk BC... Fall out of the sky, so to speak
the recoil, while there, isn't bad... in the 338 range, 35-45 ftlbs depending on the load...
I bet I send in my 45/70 frame for one
