Your Favorite .500?
Of all the different .500s and .500 magnums, what is your favorite one? i think the .500 Jeffery is my favorite, with the .500A2 my 2nd favorite and in 3rd place would be the classic .500NE.

i think i would really like to have a CZ 550 Magnum Express Rifle in .500 Jeffery.

If you can include those just under .500, (there are some discussed on this site)
I vote for the .499 HE: http://ammoguide.com/?catid=749

My favorites are: 1st is the 12.7x68 (aka: 49-10), 2nd is the 500 MDM, 3rd is the 500 B&M, 4th is the 50 B&M, 6th is the 50 B&M SA, and 7th is the 50 B&M SS.

All listed are true .500 caliber rifles, not .510 caliber rifles...

500 Acc Rel .... - no doubt (but with the right throating...), sure that RIP`s 500 Mbogo Short will be similar attractive... Makes a light and short, fasthandling DGR

500 AccRel Nyati (i.e., short-throated) is all the rifle that I plan to carry in this calibre.

If I wanted more umph than 7000 ftlbs, then a
500 Mbogo (ballistically like A2, without the belt, 8000+ ftlbs.).

Then a 49-10, which is the 500AccRel with .500" bullets.

I stay away from the Jeffrey or Gibbs because I would want to load them to capacity (8500 and 9000 ft lbs) and I don't plan on carrying around such thundersticks in reasonably weighted hunting rifles (10-10.5 lb. scoped).

50 B&M--500 MDM--50 B&M Super Short--50 B&M Alaskan and soon to be 500 B&M.

All of these are true .500 caliber. And while there are far more powerful and faster 500s, there are NONE smaller and as compact, and far more suitable bullets in place for .500 caliber than in .510. Lot's more choices, and all very compact for their capabilities.

The CZ 550s in 500 Jeffery can take a bit to make them feed and extract perfectly (that goes for 500 Jeffs in general I guess). Mine has two mercury recoil reducers in it (it balances better for me that way), but I love mine. It's my favorite rifle to shoot offhand, and shoots sub MOA (not that you need that in a big 50) with 570g TSX's at 2300 fps

Being a double guy I'd say 500 NE first with the 50 B&M second and the 50 SS B&M third. The B&M cartridges are all tops!

I really like lever actions so for me --- .50 alaskan or 50-110 winchester. Not as powerful as some others but fun!

I have one 500, it is so awesome not sure why i would need another. It is a 500MDM. That thing handles so sweetly, when i throw it up, the bead is in the cradle everytime, and most ofnthe time it is perfectly in the rear sight. Power is certainly adequate, seems to be on par with a 500 nitro.

Don't forget to mention your rifle weighs 8 lbs, and has a 19 inch barrel. On Par with the 500 Nitro?
No buddy, you are far ahead of the 500 Nitro--In fact, the 500 MDM makes the 500 Nitro look like a "Sissy" in the field, and for effectiveness!!!!!!! And far shorter, far lighter!

Sam? rotflmo

Although when the 500 MDM was designed, it was meant to equal 500 Nitro performance, just so happens it exceeded, especially so with the bullets designed for it from CEB and North Fork, which in the end, it's the bullet that enhances the cartridge, the cartridge is but a delivery method! Bullet does the work you know!

My choice is 500 AHR by American Hunting Rifles, no feeding issues, and my double 500 NE.

All fun to shoot.

Michael, I know the 500 MDM makes the 500NE look weak but not sissy. That little 50 B&M almost makes a 500NE look weak.

I have to say my favourite 50 is my 510 Wells. If I get to pick one I don't own then 505. That big case has always impressed me. A short 500 would be nice but not in the funding right now.

Lets see, I've built .500NE's ,.505 and .510 Gibbs, .500 Jefferies, .500 A2's, and .500/.600OK's and own a .500AHR. My favorite is the .500 a2. It's EXTREMELY easy to build on a CZ550, uses reliable high pressure brass and requires just a expander pass on a .460 wby case. Feeds like a dream too. provides All the recoil most guys can actually handle! -Rob

If you say ".500" then 12.7x68/49-10 has no competition. It is hands down, best ever, .500-caliber rifle.

If you had said "500" without the decimal, then that would be open to debate, to include various .500 to .512 caliber rifles. Wink

I dont own one yet but the 510-505 Gibbs has always sparked my interest. I also like the .500 Mbogo. I would never get a Jeffery though, to many good 500's without heavily rebated rimes to bother with it.

Your choice boils down to how much gun you want to shoot:

9000 ftlbs leads to a .510 Gibbs
8000 ftlbs leads to a 500 Mbogo
[7000 ftlbs leads to a 500 AccRel Nyati]

very nice looking rifle. either this month or very early next month i'm getting my single shot in 450/400 NE. then i might be saving up for a CZ 550 in .500 Jeffery, either that or a rifle from the Weatherby custom shop will be the next rifle i buy. even if i buy the Weatherby first i'll still probably get a CZ 550 in .500 Jeffery as soon as i can. i'm thinking i might want to get CZ to put a removable muzzlebrake on this rifle.

Yes, Accurate Innovations stock. It was a piece of wood I had Corbin pick up for me a couple of years ago, along with 2 more blanks. This one was premium and one of a kind for sure. And it will get hunted. The rifle has already been to both Africa and Alaska, but it has not been out since the stock was put on. I have been busy with other rifles and cartridges in the field since then, but at some point it will go out.

Thanks Kev! Knew you would like that, but for you where you are you are going to have to like one of those Ultimate stocks! Too wet for this one! LOL...........

Thanks Chuck!
