single shot rifles
I read with great interest what appears to be a dislike of single shot DGR's.It seems that many years ago I read an article (possibly witten by the late great Elmer Keith) stating that single shot big bore rifles could be reloaded rapidly (with practice of course!!)by holding reload rounds in your supporting hand between your fingers.Anybody remember the article or have thoughts on this.I trully love the look and feel of my Ruger No.1 416 Rem.compared to my Win.model 70 375H&H. John Taylor also held the single shot in high regard. and I under stand that there was a PH that used a ruger #1 as a back up rifle at one time. If any one wanted to laugh at my #1 I would remind them that a bolt is just a single shot with a handy place to store a few spare rounds.

The so-called "DRAW BACKS" of a good single shot like the Ruger No1, in the right chambering, are much over blown, IMO! Many of the old guys used large bore single shots to hunt everything, but usually in combination with a big bore double rifle of the same chambering. I wouldn't be opposed to hunting Buffalo with any of my bigbore No1s, in fairly open bush. in the tight thorn, though, I'd still pick my doubles! [Cool]

redmax, you are certainly right about quick reloading for single-shots, and Keith also described reloading a double the same way. Two new rounds between the fingers of the supporting hand. Pop the action open, raise the muzzle to dump the two extracted empties (non-ejector gun), slide the two new rounds in, close....

Owning a single shot alone would never prevent me from hunting dangerous game. I have and will do, though warrented or not I felt more what "ifs" when doing so . Many thousands of buffalo, elephant and rhino have been taken with the slowest of arms. You can die holding a bolt or a double in your hands.
