.505 Gibbs Double?
Reading "Hunter" page 124 I believe Buff hunting he references using the .505 Gibbs and the 525 grn solid which he calls quite effective. Then he goes on about using the left and right barrels. I'm thinking typo/mistake as I don't believe that this round would be used in a double.

Hunter was known to use .500 NE's, so I suspect a typo. But, I'll have to look that up. I have a couple of different editions. As many times as I've read that book, I never noticed this. Thanks.

I have two 1952 editions which say the same thing. On page 123 he also says he fired a left and right at the elephants. He killed twelve elephants at this time. The 525 grain should be a .505 Gibbs. The 500NE should be 570 grain. I wonder if Cal Pappas has any input on this "double Gibbs".

Yeah he specifically says .505 Gibbs in my edition. Haha I only notice that now since I am the proud owner of one. If I wanted a double 500 I would go Nitro Express for sure. In fact I do want one. I am guessing typo? How would a rimless work in a double? Not that good I assume?

Hunter's 505 was a run of the mill Gibbs Mauser Magnum and not a double.

The 500 was a Boswell and he also used a 475 No 2.

It is more than likely a error made in the book, which is not uncommon for some of these books.

If one reads closely into Bell's books there are errors as well with regards to caliber designation.

My Dad's friend who is a PH in RSA has a Heym Bolt action and a Heym double - both in .505 Gibbs - is what he told me.

I can't check up at the moment since the old man is in hospital with serious health problems and I only knew the PH as being the old man's neighbour. So the evidence I have is pretty shaky, but ...

Perhaps some more research before just writing it off.

BTW in "Hunter" I seem to recall him using a .577 double.
