416 rigby
I am considering buying a 416 rigby bbl for my encore,What velocities can I get from a ported 15 inch bbl? SSK has a 416 chambering but the rigby would not require fireforming brass or special dies.Is there another big bore that would be better for elk?I shoot a 444 marlin in my contender but would like something bigger. Any ideas?

Which direction are you planning on the velocities going..Use lots of vasline on your eyebrows, wrap your face with asbestos and use a mouthpiece. You'll do just fine. Hot loaded, you should get up to perhaps 2600 FPS with a 400 gr. bullet. A standard rifle will get 2700 plus loaded hot. Nice talking to you

Thanks for the reply,I e-mailed bullberry about this bbl but no response yet.I am guessing by your response a person would not be able to hang onto this.is there a better big bore for the encore?

There is a guy on the www.graybeardoutdoors.com forum that has been asking the same questions about the 416 Rigby on an Encore. I shoot a 470 NE with a 15 3/4 barrel on my Encore and the recoil is not that bad. Last time I went to the range, I put 15 rounds of factory ammo through it with no problems. Uncomplete powder burn is a problem though.

I have a T/C in 458x2" and have the same problem of unburned powder, using rifle loads.I have worked on some loads using 350 Hornady's and RL7 and 4198. The faster the powder the more recoil for sure.I loaded some 300 gr. hollow points but haven't shot them. I would think that you would have a lot of unburned powder even in a 16" barrel.Mark

I was thinking of 416 Rigby from VVG in encore. Still thinking this versus 458 Winchester amg or 416 Ultramag. I have the 411 and 358-06 JDJ ad a 35 Whelen barrel Unburnt powder is a rule. You can load cast bullets at reduced speeds What a great round.

ty,

E. Arthur Brown offers the .416 Rigby in an encore barrel. I can't vouch for their barrels, but I have bought other items from them and been satisfied.

358Mark,

Is that .458 American on an Encore? In the 70's a 'smith in Delaware showed me a .458 American, recall it being about 8", he made up for his Contender. Claimed it was a great brush gun for whitetail. Maybe I should have bought one. Then again I notice none of the big-name Contender barrel makers offer this cartridge. Hmmmm...
